  • Tuesday, July 27, 2:00 pm – 3:00 pm – Grafting the Grape: Choctaw Foodways, Online

    Missouri Botanical Garden sponsors a free presentation and discussion on July 27 at 2 pm Eastern on Choctaw foodways with Choctaw Nation Tribal Preservation Officer Dr. Ian Thompson on the use of grapes and other plants and animals in the Choctaw Nation, from pre-contact to the present. Dr. Thompson will also present on the indigenous knowledge and land management principles. Preregistration is required. ASL interpretation and live captioning provided for each program, and presentations will be recorded for later viewing on the MOBOT’s YouTube channel. A Zoom link will be sent in your confirmation.   • Saturday, February 24, 9:00 am – 12:30 pm – Grafting Woody Plants

    Instructor Sean Halloran, Plant Propagator, Arnold Arboretum of Harvard University, will lead a workshop on Grafting Woody Plants in the Dana Greenhouse of the Arnold Arboretum, 1050 Centre Street in Jamaica Plain, on Saturday, February 24 from 9 – 12:30.

    Grafting is the technique of joining parts of separate plants in such a manner that they unite and continue their growth as one. Learn basic principles of grafting with an overview of different types of dormant-season grafts. Arnold Arboretum propagator Sean will provide step-by-step instructions so that you can practice both cleft and side veneer grafts using apple root stock. Simple after-care will be required until planting out in springtime.

    Registrants will need to sign an Assumption of Risk and Release in order to participate in this class. $62 for Arboretum members, $75 for nonmembers. Register at www.arboretum.harvard.edu.

  • Saturday, February 3, 1:00 pm – 4:00 pm – Japanese Maple Grafting for Home Gardeners

    Come join Broken Arrow Nurseries grafting guru Adam Wheeler at Tower Hill Botanic Garden on Saturday, February 3 from 1 – 4 for a hands-on workshop that explores the world of grafting Japanese Maples. After a lecture that explores the methods and intricacies of this time-tested craft, participants will put their newfound knowledge to work by grafting a few specimens of their own. All materials included in the fee, which is $60 for THBG members and $75 for nonmembers..

    Adam Wheeler manages plant propagation, container production, mail order and the acquisition and development of new plants at Broken Arrow Nursery. He is a recent recipient of the Young Nursery Professional Award from the New England Nursery Association. He loves to share his passion for plants through photography and educational outreach.     UMass Extension’s Fruit Program has announced its 2016 Seminars (visit http://ag.umass.edu/fruit/mass-aggie-seminars-2016 for full list) and today we highlight the March 19 hands on workshop on Apple Tree Grafting. Many people do not realize that all apple varieties are reproduced by grafting – they are not grown from seed. For horticultural enthusiasts, one of the most satisfying techniques to master is grafting. Wes Autio will present a hands-on workshop on ‘bench grafting’ and ‘cleft grafting’ of apple trees. Other grafting techniques will be discussed. Proper tools and sharpening will be included. All participants in the workshop will graft several of their own apples trees to take home. There will be a break for participants to enjoy a BYO lunch.The class will run from 9 – 3 at the UMass Cold Spring Orchard, 391 Sabin Street in Belchertown.
