  • Thursday, July 12, 6:00 pm -9:00 pm (rain date Thursday, July 19) – 14th Annual Lantern Festival

    Join The Friends of Forest Hills Educational Trust on Thursday, July 12 from 6 – 9 pm (rain date Thursday, July 19) for a moving memorial ceremony inspired by Buddhist rituals. Inscribe a lantern with a personal message to friends or family and float it across Lake Hibiscus at sunset. Bring a family picnic.  Enjoy Grand Master Tsuji’s Samurai Taiko drummers, gospel music by Ron Murphy, Irish music by guitar/fiddle duo The Whiskey Boys, and traditional Japanese dance by students of Showa Institute.     In this breathtaking ceremony of remembrance, visitors to this lush, Victorian landscape make paper lanterns and set them afloat on the peaceful waters of a small lake. This ritual is based on the traditional Japanese Bon Festival, a time when a door opens to the world of the ancestors, allowing us to send messages to the other side. People enjoy picnics on the grass and a multi-cultural program of music and dance. They decorate their lanterns with calligraphy and notes to those who have died. At sunset, a candle is lit in each lantern, and the glimmering lanterns are set afloat. Drifting and flickering with the wind, the lanterns symbolize the soul’s journey when life ends.  Admission is free, with a $10 donation per lantern. Parking is $10, and people are encouraged to take the T.  No lighting after dark, so bring a flashlight to assist your departure.  For more information, log on to www.foresthillstrust.org.

     

  • Thursday, April 26, 7:00 pm – Grass-Free Small Gardens

    Designing a landscape with shrubs, sub-shrubs, and ground-covers can eliminate the chore of mowing and significantly reduce the need for supplementary water and fertilizer. This Massachusetts Horticultural Society slide lecture given by Sally Muspratt of Sally Muspratt Landscape Design explores ways of creating beautiful, ecologically responsible, low maintenance plantings without enraging the neighbors with horticulturally correct sunburned, shaggy lawns.   • Saturday, June 20, 9 – 5 – Annual White Flower Farm Open House

    For the past 56 years, White Flower Farm has been pleased to welcome old friends and new for iced tea and cucumber sandwiches on the lawn by their house. This informal tea party provides an opportunity for some garden chat, a leisurely view of the white border, and a cameo appearance by the pair of Shire horses used to mow grass. The date of the annual Open House this year is Saturday, June 20. The hosts for this gathering will include some or all of the owner’s children, and they are looking forward to meeting you. Service begins about 2:30, weather permitting, and continues until the grub runs out. The hat contest is in its second year. Last year some two-dozen ladies appeared in stylish sunbonnets and the winner, Ms. Donna Ferri, created a design that won our $100 gift certificate hands down.

    The annual Open House coincides with a spring Tent Sale that will be held Friday and Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the store. Bring a friend and enjoy bargains on plants and garden accessories, as well as a stroll around the display gardens to see what we’ve been up to.
