  • Sunday, May 2, 11:00 am – 5:00 pm- Castle Hill on The Crane Estate Open House

    In celebration of spring, The Trustees of Reservations invite you to the 2nd Annual, FREE Spring Open House at Castle Hill on the Crane Estate to enjoy a day of fun. Plant a seedling and help them recover some of the hundreds of trees lost in the recent nor’easter. Pack a picnic and they’ll provide lawn games such as croquet and bocce ball, a Maypole dance, self-guided tours of the Great House and grounds, refreshments, and more. Please feel free to bring friends and family, but leave furry friends at home.

    The Open House thanks the public for its support of The Trustees’ ongoing restoration of the Castle Hill grounds, which in recent years has included historic plantings and restorations of the Italian Garden and the Great House forecourt. This February, The Trustees began the first phase of a 3-year renovation plan of the Grand Allee, the one-half mile long, undulating, grassy lawn framed by classical sculptures, Norway spruce, and pine hedgerows. Phase One of the project includes the removal of approximately 150 trees and the planting of 65 7-foot Norway spruce and White Pines.

    The Allee Restoration was disrupted by the late February nor’easter that wreaked havoc on the North Shore. Castle Hill was hit particularly hard, with more than 300 trees coming down in the storm. Crews worked tirelessly to clean up the property and make it safe for the public. Much work, including replanting trees and stabilizing stripped embankments, remains. The Trustees invite the public to help by planting seedlings in celebration of spring at the May 2nd Open House.

  • Saturday, May 22 – Saturday, May 29 – Chelsea Flower Show and English Gardens Tour

    Do you need to give someone a Christmas gift wish list? The Education Department of Tower Hill Botanic Garden is sponsoring a guided tour of the Chelsea Flower Show and English Gardens from Saturday, May 22 through Saturday, May 29.  The Chelsea Flower show is considered to be the world’s pre-eminent horticultural event. Its Show Gardens are created by leading international landscape architects and garden designers. The Great Pavilion is the spectacular centerpiece of the CFS. Nurseries and growers dazzle visitors with displays of color from the world’s finest plant collections. The show also features the continuous Learning section that gives visitors insight into the gardens of the future. The Gardening Matters Marquee hosts talks by gardening experts, covering all aspects of gardening and design and gives the visitor the opportunity to pose questions to the experts.     Kick off the holiday season at the Crane Estate as local florists and designers transform the Great House into a feast for the senses.

    Take a self-guided tour and enjoy cider, fresh-baked cookies, and the Gift Gallery with distinctive gifts.

    Throughout the weekend, there will be scheduled events including a tree-lighting, live music, a dance presentation, and more.

  • Saturday, November 28, 10:00 am – 12 noon – Doyle Reservation Tree Tour

    Join a self-proclaimed lover of trees (and forester) on a guided tour of the grounds at the Doyle Estate and Pierce Park on Saturday, November 28, from 10:00 am – 12 noon.  You will be introduced to the over fifty species of trees which call the estate home.  This is a free event, sponsored by The Trustees of Reservations, and you may sign up by calling 978-840-4446, x 1900, or emailing central@ttor.org.  Driving directions to Leominster are available at www.thetrustees.org.

    At the turn of the 20th century, Harry W. Pierce assembled a grand estate featuring a 29-room stucco mansion, stable, horse paddocks, a pond, and an extensive system of bridle paths. Today, this estate is the Doyle Reservation, with Pierce Park and the Doyle Conservation Center at its heart.

    Pierce Park is made up of 10 of the original landscaped grounds from the estate (most of the trees and shrubs are from the estate’s original design and plantings). Doyle Conservation Center, a LEED Gold-Certified “green” building, serves as one of The Trustees of Reservations’ regional offices.  Pierce Park is a link in the Monoosnoc Trail. More trails are planned.

  • Saturday, November 21, 11:00 am – 4:00 pm – Homes For The Holidays

    Fabulous homes in the Annisquam and Rowley Shore area of Gloucester will be open to the public on Saturday, November 21, for a self guided tour from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Some of these beautiful homes will be professionally decorated for the holidays. “Homes for the Holidays” is a program of the Cape Ann Chamber of Commerce Businesswomen’s Division.

    The Home Tour is being planned by the Businesswomen to support the Carolyn O’Connor Scholarship. Named for the first Chairperson of this active Chamber group, the scholarship benefits a woman who is changing careers or returning to the workforce after an absence and is in need of further education. The Businesswomen have given out four $1,000 scholarships since it was created in 2006. The group is hoping to raise enough funds to either increase the scholarship amount or the number of scholarships for 2010.

    Tickets are $25.00 in advance and $30.00 on the day of the tour. Actual tickets and a map showing the location of the homes can be picked up on the day of the tour at the Cape Ann Chamber of Commerce, 33 Commercial Street, Gloucester between 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. Contact the Chamber office at (978) 283-1601 to order your advance tickets.

    The South End Historical Society (SEHS) presents its 41st Annual South End House Tour on Saturday, October 17, from 10 – 5.  This self-guided tour of private homes and public spaces begins at the Boston Center for the Arts, 539 Tremont Street, where you pick up your tickets and guidebook.  Tickets are $25 each, and may be purchased on line at www.southendhistoricalsociety.org.  For more information, call 617-536-4445, or email admin@southendhistoricalsociety.org.

    The South End Historical Society  is a group of interested citizens that recognizes the unique architectural and cultural history of the South End of Boston. Through the efforts of the society, the South End has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places as the largest Victorian brick rowhouse district in the United States.

    During its first thirty years, the SEHS has worked continuously to retain the Victorian integrity of the South End and reintroduce the greater Boston area to the South End with its annual House Tour as well as numerous historical programs and events. The SEHS also encourages research, conservation, and education to protect and promote interest in our local historic buildings, monuments, and sites.

    The South End Historical Society is one of the primary contributors to the preservation of the South End and a supporter of its ongoing revitalization.

  • Sunday, October 18, 10:00 am – 1:00 pm – Fall Clean Up of Olmsted’s Historic Grounds

    The weeds and vines are entangling Olmsted’s rhododendrons and encroaching views at Stonehurst, The Robert Treat Paine Estate in Waltham, Massachusetts, on Sunday, October 18, from 10 – 1.  Help restore these historic grounds and get some exercise to boot.  Please bring work or gardening gloves and any pruning tools you have handy.  Following the clean-up operation, the house will be open to the public from 12 noon until 3 pm, with a guided tour offered at 1 pm.  Light refreshments will be provided.  For directions to 100 Robert Treat Paine Drive please call 781-314-3290, or log on to www.stonehurstwaltham.org.

    Join The A.D. Makepeace Company and the Cape Cod Cranberry Growers’ Association for the 6th Annual Cranberry Harvest Celebration, Saturday and Sunday, October 10 – 11, 2009, at A.D. Makepeace Company Headquarters at Tihonet Village, 158 Tihonet Road in Wareham.  10:00 a.m. to 4 p.m., rain or shine, admission $2.00, age 6 and under free. Free event parking.

    This fun family event features juried crafters, activities for children, cooking demonstrations, pony and wagon rides, and much more. The highlight of the day is a guided tour of a working cranberry bog. Please, no pets.

    The Trustees of Reservations continue to protect new special places all the time, with a particular focus on the agricultural heritage of the South Coast region.  Be one of the first to enjoy a guided tour of this newly protected farm and explore its varied habitats of field, forest and salt marsh with naturalist Garry Plunkett.  Cornell Farm is located in South Dartmouth, admission to the event is free, and directions and further information can be obtained by calling 508-679-2115, or emailing seregion@ttor.org.

  • Through October 11, 2009, 9 – 2 – Chappaquiddick Natural History Tour

    Enjoy a 2 ½ hour oversand vehicle exploration across Chappaquiddick’s barrier beach, sponsored by the Trustees of Reservations. Your guided tour includes an exploration of the rare maritime forests that inhabit the farthest reaches of the island. You’ll also stop at the Cape Poge Lighthouse to learn its history, climb the spiral staircase, and witness breathtaking views of Martha’s Vineyard, Cape Cod and Nantucket.  Relax and enjoy the birding, beachcombing, and photographic moments this journey has to offer, as you discover the fascinating natural history of Cape Cod.  For more information, log on to www.thetrustees.org.
