  • Tuesday, January 18, 3:00 pm – Champagne Tea at UpStairs on the Square

    The Garden Club of the Back Bay again celebrates the successful completion of its holiday wreath project with a sumptuous winter tea, on Tuesday, January 18 beginning at 3 pm, this year hosted by Mary-Catherine Deibel at UpStairs on the Square, 91 Winthrop Street, in the heart of Harvard Square in Cambridge. The restaurant is easily accessible by T (Red Line to Harvard Square) or taxi, and parking is validated ($2 off) in three garages – the Charles Hotel Garage, University Place Garage, and the Harvard Square Garage.   • Wednesday, March 10, 6:00 pm – The Weeping Goldsmith

    As part of the Globe Corner Bookstores Adventure Lecture Series, author W. John Kress will give an illustrated talk about and read from his latest book The Weeping Goldsmith: Discoveries in the Secret Land of Myanmar.

    The Weeping Goldsmith is a remarkable memoir of the over nine years that Dr. Kress spent exploring the wilderness of Myanmar in search of rare and beautiful plants, and how he came to appreciate Myanmar’s unique people and culture. The book contains past explorers’ archival photographs as well as 200 of the author’s color photographs of plants, people, landscapes, and temples. A 10-page portfolio includes photographs of 50 Myanmar plants, with botanical profiles and habitat detail.

    W. John Kress prefaces his book by explaining that it “is about the natural landscapes and people of Myanmar as interpreted through the eyes of a modern-day scientist and plant explorer…I surveyed the teak forests, bamboo thickets, timber plantations, rivers, and mangroves to document the plant diversity of this vast unknown land. Myanmar is one of the world’s great biodiversity hot spots in Asia, but because of its social isolation and reputation for political repression it has been off-limits and avoided by many biologists, conservationists, and environmentalists.”

  • Saturday, October 3, 2 – 4 pm – Food Preservation Talk & Afternoon Tea

  • Sunday, September 20, 11 am – 4 pm – Urban Agricultural Fair in Harvard Square

    Join Cambridge Local First for its First Annual Urban-Ag fair being held on the very historic site of the first marketplace in Newtowne (1630’s). The 2009 Urban-Ag fair will bring to market some of the most incredible locally grown fruits and vegetables ever seen. Prizes will be awarded for the tastiest, the biggest, the most interesting, and in some cases the ugliest fruits, veggies, baked goods, honey, flowers, preserves, pickles and eggs! Cooking demonstrations from local chefs, gardeners, and “Cambridge School student-growers” will be held throughout the day. Come to sample recipes and/or to stock up on the bounty of our harvest from our local farmers markets, get tips from local experts on composting, community gardening, rain barrels, and bee-keeping! All events are free, open to the public and family-friendly. Kids are encouraged to enter to win Student Prizes in every category!
