    Heirloom tomatoes are the jewels of summer. In this two-day workshop at Tower Hill Botanic Garden on August 11 & 12 from 10 – 4, join botanical artist Helen Byers to draw their fascinating forms, rich colors, and surface and interior textures in detail. Helen’s demos, tips, and personalized instruction will guide students in practicing a technique of botanical drawing that combines colored pencil and watercolor.

    Join botanical artist Helen Byers on July 28 and 29 from 10 – 4 in this two-day Tower Hill Botanic Garden workshop to celebrate summer flowers. Analyzing the forms of selected blooms from life and under magnification, we will create detailed watercolor studies of their botanical features and “personalities.” Helen’s demos, tips, and personalized instruction will guide students in the practice of painting in layers, using wet-into-wet, dry-brush, and masking techniques to achieve luminous color, challenging textures, and fine details.

    Join botanical artist Helen Byers in this two-day workshop at Tower Hill Botanic Garden on Tuesday and Wednesday, April 24 and 25 from 10 – 4, to draw and/or paint anemones, daffodils, early tulips, or another spring blossom of your choice. Helen’s demos and personalized instruction will cover step-by-step processes of detailed botanical art techniques using graphite in combination with watercolor.     In this two-day Tower Hill Botanic Garden workshop on April 3 & 4, botanical artist Helen Byers will demonstrate the use of watercolor to create a fine portrait of a pansy. Working from live plants, our goal will be to accurately and beautifully depict a given flower’s “face,” leaves, and growth habit.     Join Tower Hill Botanic Garden and Helen Byers in this one-day workshop on Sunday, February 18 from 10 – 4 to refine your drawing skills. Choose a subject from Helen’s collection of “treasures”-maybe a bit of bark or lichen, a dry leaf or seedpod, a small cone-and draw it in detail. We’ll explore the exciting possibilities of using graphite to render a full range of neutral tones and textures. Individualized instruction will include demos and helpful tips. Instruction will cover a technique of drawing in layers using colored pencils and watercolor pencils to achieve rich color, correct values, and fine detail.     How is your appetite for drawing veggies? Here’s your chance to find out! Join Helen Byers at Tower Hill Botanic Garden August 29, 30 and 31 from 10 – 4 to create a botanical portrait of a vegetable that “calls” to you. We’ll work in layers to achieve accurate proportions, luminous color, necessary values, and fine detail. Daily demos, tips, and personalized instruction.     Helen Byers is an artist and educator who is active in botanical and natural science drawing and painting. Her professional background includes book illustration, art journalism, college-level teaching of art and literature, and a career in educational publishing.

    Helen’s botanical art recently received international recognition at the 19th International Exhibition of the American Society of Botanical Artists and the Horticultural Society of New York (2016). Her work has been shown nationally as well as widely in the Greater Boston area. Her affiliations include the American Society of Botanical Artists, the New England Society of Botanical Artists, and Concord Center for the Visual Arts.

  • Sundays, March 5 & 12, 10:00 am – 4:00 pm – Camellias in Color: Choose Your Medium!

    Bring your watercolors or colored pencils and join botanical artist Helen Byers on Sundays, March 5 & 12 at Tower Hill Botanic Garden to draw or paint camellias during Tower Hill’s inspiring camellia show. Demos and instruction will focus on botanical art techniques in each medium to convey in detail the beautiful textures, forms, and colors of camellia petals, buds, and leaves. Instruction will cover the parts of a twig (maybe more than you knew!), tips on composition, and drybrush watercolor technique to convey details of bark and bud.
