    A fast paced, stressful lifestyle can wreak havoc upon our physical and emotional well-being. While lifestyle changes are often the key to managing stress levels, there are many wonderful herbs that can help support us in making positive life changes. Steph Zabel covers practical herbal remedies that support the nervous system and help us to shift from a “fight or flight” state of being into a more relaxed state. In this Wellesley College Botanic Gardens workshop on Tuesday, December 13 from 1 – 2:30, you will review and sample relaxing nervine herbs that many people find useful for dealing with stress, anxiety, and sleep issues.   • Thursday, November 10, 1:30 pm – 3:00 pm – Herbs for the Holidays: The Science of Stuffing and Beyond

    Join the Massachusetts Horticultural Society at Elm Bank on Thursday, November 10 at 1:30 and learn about the historical uses of herbs in food preservation and the modern day understanding of their benefits for healthy living. Dr. Mohsen Meydani of Tufts University and John Forti, Mass Hort Director of Horticulture and Education, will use herbs from our gardens to present the beneficial uses of herbs and a hands-on component allows you to pot up a fresh herb plant to take home for the holidays!

    This lecture is the latest offering from the collaboration between Massachusetts Horticultural Society and the Jean Mayer USDA Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging to bring news of the most current scientific research and how-to horticultural skills in regards to nutritional benefits of plants.     Herbs are an easy way to add freshness, flavor, and health to your cooking, and are simple to grow indoors or out. Learn how you can grow and cook with basil, cilantro, parsley, oregano, rosemary, and more. On Saturday, June 11, beginning at 11 am, the Egleston Square Branch of the Boston Public Library, 2044 Columbus Avenue in Roxbury, will present a class on Growing Herbs at Home.   • Sunday, May 3, 1:00 pm – 3:30 pm – The Portable Potted Herb Garden

    Grow your own culinary herbs, available for snipping from May to November. Nothing enhances meals like the taste of fresh herbs. Create an herb garden that can be moved from place to place to take full advantage of available sunlight. Plant 6 classic culinary herbs in a 14″ container to grow on a sunny porch, patio or doorstep. Plants, pot, soil and a copy of instructor Betsy Williams’s cookbook, Mrs. Thrift Cooks, are included. Tastings of a selection of herb butters, pestos, vinegars and salts, as well as rosemary walnuts, are also included. Please bring an apron and flower scissors to class.

    Betsy teaches, lectures and writes about living with herbs and flowers. A gardener and herb grower since 1972, Betsy trained as a florist in Boston and England. She combines her floral and gardening skills with an extensive knowledge of history, plant lore and seasonal celebrations. Betsy is the author of several books on the uses and stories of herbs and flowers. She has appeared on the Discovery Channel and greater Boston cable stations as well as local and national radio talk shows. On Saturday, July 27, beginning at 10 am at Tower Hill Botanic Garden, we will  fill a tall glass container with fragrant, colorful herbs and garden flowers to make a lovely, fresh arrangement for your home. Herbs are not just green. Most have lovely flowers and make delightful, fragrant additions to fresh flower arrangements. Learn when and how to cut garden flowers for arranging, what “green” herbs make great fillers and how, if necessary, to select cut herbal flowers from the florist.
