  • Wednesday, May 29, 4:00 pm – 6:00 pm – Fungi Foray in Beebe Woods with Larry Millman

    Join Larry Millman, author-ethnographer-mycologist, for an informative, entertaining and engaging Fungi Foray in Beebe Woods. The Highfield Hall and Gardens program takes place May 29 from 4 – 6 at 56 Highfield Drive in Falmouth. Larry has studied fungi all over the world– especially in his own backyard of New England. As you wander through the woods on this mushroom walk, Larry will focus on fungal ecology rather than edibility. You’ll learn what fungi are doing in their respective habitats as well as their common names. Bring a hand lens or magnifier if you have one (some of the species will be very small) and a sense of curiosity.   • Friday, May 17 – Sunday, October 20 – Alfred Glover in the Garden

    From May 17 through October 20, Heritage Museums & Gardens in Sandwich will host a solo exhibition of works by sculptor Alfie Glover, of Cataumet. Frequent visitors to Heritage may recognize Glover’s whimsical, folk-art style sculptures, as one of his pieces, “Garden Gate,” has been installed in the McInnes Garden for several years. This show brings his bold, colorful depictions of animals, trees, and other wildlife to the rest of Heritage’s grounds and gardens. Glover’s work has been displayed in venues throughout the Northeast, most notably at Cape Cod Museum of Art, Cahoon Museum of American Art, Highfield Hall & Gardens, Mass Audubon Long Pasture Wildlife Sanctuary, Boston Children’s Hospital, Falmouth Hospital, and Cape Cod Hospital.

  • Sunday, May 19, 1:00 pm – 2:30 pm – Magical Fairy Garden Workshop for Adults

    What kind of garden will your fairies live in? In this all-time favorite workshop for grown-up kids on May 19, start with your imagination and build an enchanting fairy world from there! Immerse yourself in decorative details as you embellish your magical fairy house, pond, sitting bench, and walkway using a mix of small live plants and other accents to create your unique fairy garden that can be displayed inside or out.   • Now Through December 10 – Holidays at Highfield: Holidays Through the Generations

    The Holidays are set for another year of spectacular decorating, seasonal activities, displays and the Snow Queen and Snow Princess are expected to set up residence on specific days. The Gift Gallery will once again be alive with artisan gifts for all ages. Come on in and complete your Holiday shopping!

    Lead designers Sandra Cavallo and Sarah Pring will lead our group of talented designers to create a memorable experience for all who attend.  This year’s theme will be Holidays Through the Generations, and will focus on designs from vintage 19th century, through the 40’s, 50’s, 60’s, 70’s through modern day as the DIY movement has become more mainstream.

    With the help of the Nauset Model Railroad Club, Highfield will bring back a train system for all ages to enjoy!  This incredible group of train enthusiasts have designed a train system that will put a sparkle in your eye!

    The traditional Craft Room will be located on the 2nd floor and is a drop in experience to create your special keepsake to remember Holidays at Highfield.

  • Saturday, March 25, 12:30 pm – 2:00 pm – Spring Indoor Garden Workshop with Anna Holmes

    Join Anna Holmes at Highfield Hall in Falmouth on March 25 at 12:30 for this fun, relaxing hands-on workshop about putting together a beautiful miniature indoor garden.  During the workshop Anna will discuss professional design tips, how to source materials, the care of flowers & design, how to calculate product needs and the storage & packaging of containers. The materials will include a combination of flowering plants, upright tropical, trailing tropical, container, moss, curly willow and raffia bow. The actual plant selection is determined based on plant availability.

  • Wednesday, September 7, 5:30 pm – 7:00 pm – Amazon Forest Agricultural Expansion and Climate Change

    Dr. Marcia Macedo, Water Program Director and Senior Scientist at Woodwell Climate Research Center, takes a unique view of the Amazon forests as she explores how agricultural expansion and climate change is altering the flow of water through tropical landscapes, focusing on hotspots of connection between upland forests and aquatic systems like streams and rivers. Dr. Macedo has Brazilian roots and feels a strong cultural tie to the region she is now studying. The September 7 lecture begins at 5:30 and is sponsored by and held at Highfield Hall, 56 Highfield Drive in Falmouth, and is $10.

  • Thursday, October 21, 5:30 pm – 7:30 pm – Fall Wreath Workshop

    Learn how to create your own fall wreath using a mix of dried hydrangea and seasonal flowers along with pods, berries, grasses and foliage for a luxurious looking design. The finished size of this wreath is approximately 20” wide. Anna Holmes will review where to source local materials, drying flowers for future wreaths/designs and keeping your wreath fresh looking. We encourage you to bring your favorite things to incorporate into your wreath for a combination of student’s own collection and materials provided by instructor.

    Join us on August 11 at 5:30 at Highfield Hall & Garden in Falmouth under the Highfield tent for the third installment of this series featuring Loretta Roberson, Ph.D., Associate Scientist from Marine Biological Laboratory and Scott Lindell, Research Specialist, AOPE Dept., Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution.

    The series will explore the synergies between art and science as a way to communicate important issues surrounding the environment and planetary health while inspiring change and stimulating action. In conjunction with two exhibitions at Highfield, SEAChange: Meditations on Sustainability and Turn the Tide: Courtney Mattison, participating artists and scientists will discuss a range of topics, including ocean acidification and coral bleaching, biofuels and the Blue Economy, mapping as an artform and a communication tool, plastics in the ocean, and art as means to amplify science and transform how we learn about the world.

  • Wednesday, August 11, 4:00 pm – Making the Most of Bumper Crops

    Highfield Hall, 56 Highfield Drive in Falmouth, has arranged for Gwenn Friss, Food Editor of the Cape Cod Times, to speak on Wednesday, August 11, beginning at 4 pm.  Ms. Friss, well-known food editor of the regional newspaper, is a longtime home cook who has had the privilege of interviewing scores of chefs and cookbook authors.  She’ll share her tips, and some of theirs, to help you use all your garden’s bounty and enjoy every bit of food from farmers’ markets.  A longtime journalist, Gwenn was part of a team that won an environmental award last year for the Cape Cod Times series about growing and cooking your own food, as well as benefiting from the nutrition it provides.  She will inspire you and offer concrete ideas to avoid wasting food, including some recipes for you to take home.  $5 suggested donation.
