  • Thursday, July 8 and Saturday, August 7, 10:30 am – 11:30 am – Hamilton House Landscape and Garden Tour

    Take part in a special opportunity to learn about the landscape and gardens at Hamilton House with Historic New England’s Piscataqua Region Landscape Manager Gary Wetzel. Imagine the changes in the land as wilderness yields to a busy commercial waterfront, then to farming and, finally, to formal gardens. Learn about the flowers, trees, and other plants and how the gardeners create and maintain the beautiful landscape. Tour participants are invited to visit the house at no additional charge. Landscape and garden tours are available for private groups by special arrangement. The tour will take place on Thursday, July 8 and on Saturday, August 7, from 10:30 – 11:30 am. $6 for HNE members, $12 nonmembers.   • Wednesday, June 30, 6:30 pm – 8:00 pm – Boston Modern: The Spirit of Reinvention

    The National Trust for Historic Preservation invites the public to a free event – Boston Modern: The Spirit of Reinvention -  on Wednesday, June 30, beginning at 6:30 pm, celebrating the history and debating the future of the Boston area’s Modern and recent past architecture.  Join some of the preservation movement’s sharpest thinkers and most outspoken commentators for a provocative evening exploring the critical, and often controversial, issues facing the future of Greater Boston’s 20th century structures and landscapes.  Journalist and author Anthony Flint of the Lincoln Institute of Land Policy will moderate a panel featuring David Fixler, FAIA of EYP and DOCOMOMO-US/New England, Kathy Spiegelman, Chief Planner, Harvard’s Allston Initiative, and others.  After hearing the experts, add your voice to the conversation during the public forum.

    A Special Insiders Tour of The First Church at 6:30 pm will be limited to the first 45 registrants.  The reception and program will begin at 7 pm.  RSVP to my.PreservationNation.org/BostonModern.

    Celebrate Historic New England’s 100th Birthday with strawberry shortcake and free house tours during South Berwick’s Strawberry Festival on Saturday, June 26, from 10 – 4. The Strawberry Festival is family friendly event that welcomes thousands of visitors to the town’s center for a day of musical performances, children’s games, craft and fine art vendors, food and, of course, the fabulous home made strawberry shortcake.     Take the guesswork out of watering your plants.   • Saturday, May 8, 12:00 noon – 4:00 pm – Sheep Shearing Day

    OK, we know we’re obsessed with sheep shearing, but Kate Pokorny made converts out of the Garden Club of the Back Bay members.  So celebrate spring at this annual program on Saturday, May 8, from noon – 4, at Watson Farm in Jamestown, Rhode Island.  Watch the farm flock be shorn by local shearers and visit with the baby lambs.  View the farm’s herd of heritage Red Devon Cattle and enjoy a scenic hike around the farm, located on Narragansett Bay.  Free to Historic New England members, $10 per car for nonmembers.   For more information, call 401-423-0005, or log on to www.historicnewengland.org.

  • Saturday, May 8, 11:00 am – 4:00 pm – Draft Horse Plow Day

    While we’re still on the topic of sheep shearing, come to the Spencer-Peirce Little Farm in Newbury, Massachusetts on Saturday, May 8, from 11 – 4, if you’re not already headed down to Rhode Island to Watson Farm, and watch teams of draft horses and mules from throughout New England participate in plowing demonstrations as part of this annual event.  learn how horses are harnessed, hitched, and cared for.  Watch the – you guessed it – sheep shearing and see how the wool is washed, carded, and spun into yarn.  Enjoy horse-drawn wagon rides, farm animals, blacksmithing demonstrations, children’s crafts and games.  Listen to fiddle music from E.
