    Learn how to make an evergreen wreath from scratch at this November 25th workshop led by a master gardener in the barn at Casey Farm, 2325 Boston Neck Road in Saunderstown, Rhode Island. Then, using natural materials, decorate another wreath to take home or give as a present.     Saturday and Sunday, November 3 and 4, 10:00 am – 3:00 pm – Second Annual Blue Hills Great Estates Fall Foliage Weekend

    Enjoy fall’s riot of color at peak season by visiting three historic estates built in the Blue Hills. The Eustis Estate, Wakefield Estate, and Eleanor Cabot Bradley Estate present special events throughout the weekend of November 3 and 4. Tickets to view the foliage at each location are $5 for members of Historic New England and $10 for nonmembers. Visit all three and get a free program voucher to redeem at one of the estates through December 2018.

    At the Eustis Estate:

    Landscape Tours: Hourly from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Get a new perspective at the Eustis Estate with this thirty-minute guided tour. Explore the fields, woodland, and gardens and learn about their history. The tour also examines the exterior architecture of the house and other original buildings built between 1878 and 1902. Bring comfortable walking shoes and be sure to dress appropriately for the weather.

    Fall Craft Workshops: Drop in between 10:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. Make an autumn-themed craft and bring home a reminder of the beautiful fall colors. Included with Eustis Estate admission. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

It’s a twist on a county fair – there will be lots of food, drink, music, demonstrations, and more than a few surprises. It’s going to be blue jeans and bluegrass with a down-home vibe you won’t want to miss, all in the name of raising funds for roof projects on ten historic properties.     Often, gardeners think they must choose between archetypes of the “wild, native plant garden” and the “formal, classic garden,” but there are ecologically friendly ways to create an elegant effect. Utilizing the garden and extensive land at the Eustis Estate in Milton, this interdisciplinary walk and discussion on Friday, September 14 from 1:30 – 3:30 delves into historic landscape design and plantings and teaches participants different ways to replicate the visual sophistication of these gardens using native plants. The field trip is co-sponsored by the New England Wild Flower Society and by Historic New England. $24 for sponsor members, $28 for nonmembers. Register online at www.newenglandwild.org.

  • Tuesday, August 7, 5:30 pm – 7:00 pm – Dining Out in Victorian Boston

    Explore the history of drinking and dining in Victorian Boston on a Tuesday evening in August at Otis House, 141 Cambridge Street in Boston. Come early (5:30) for a reception in the courtyard, followed by lecture at 6 pm. Historian Jim O’Connell analyzes historic menus from the Parker House, Union Oyster House, Durgin-Park, Locke-Ober, Café Marliave, Jacob Wirth, and some long-forgotten eateries to explore how nineteenth-century Boston restaurants reflected Victorian culture. Topics include the influence of French and British cooking, ostentatious multi-course banquets, working-class oyster bars and eating houses, ladies’ tea rooms and ice cream parlors, and the emergence of ethnic eateries.
