  • Sunday, June 1, 9:00 am – 12:00 noon – Painting the Secret Garden: A Watercolor Workshop at the Codman Estate

    Join Historic New England Site Manager and watercolor painter Wendy Hubbard on Sunday, June 1 at 10 am for a morning of family-friendly watercolor painting. Paint pictures inspired by the Codman Estate’s secret garden in full bloom. Fun for dabblers of all ages. Appropriate for ages four and up; kids must be accompanied by grownups, who are also encouraged to get creative and messy.

    Hundreds of varieties of perennials, both new to the market and old-time favorites, are for sale and thousands of hostas are available in creams, golds, blues, and mixes, at the annual Perennial and Hosta Sale at the Lyman Estate Greenhouses, 185 Lyman Street in Waltham. Choose from large-specimen and small plants, along with many new and hard-to-find varieties at the Lyman Estate Greenhouses. Let our experts help you choose the right plants for your garden.   • Saturday, May 17, 12:00 pm, 1:30 pm, and 3:30 pm – Boston House Museum Alliance Tours: Servant Life in Downtown Boston

    The Boston House Museum Alliance announces its spring 2014 tour series, Servant Life in Downtown Boston.  For these special tours on Saturday, May 17 (12, 1, and 3:30 pm), Otis House, Gibson House Museum, and Nichols House Museum draw on their rich collections and stories to illuminate the history of domestic service over three centuries.  The Otis House tour focuses on the countless hours it took servants to prepare for an elegant entertainment and attend to the day-to-day operations of a large household.  The tour includes a visit to the third floor, a space not currently open to the public.  Tickets ($5 per person) are sold separately at each site.  Presented by Historic New England, The Gibson House Museum, and The Nichols House Museum.  For more information contact Melinda Huff at otishouse@historicnewengland.org or call 617-994-5920.

    Historic interiors are an often overlooked element of historic properties which can tell a compelling story of a house’s history and evolution over time. Join Historic New England’s Sally Zimmerman and Jess Phelps on Saturday, May 31 at 11:00 am as they chart home interiors over time and explore options and tools for protecting these unique components of our collective built heritage. The program, co-sponsored with the Jamaica Plain Historical Society and hosted by the Jamaica Plain Tuesday Club, will take place at the Loring-Greenough House, 12 South Street, Jamaica Plain. The program is free and open to the public, although a $5 donation to the preservation of the Georgian mansion will be greatly appreciated.

  • Saturday, March 8, 11:00 am – 12:30 pm – Ladies of the House – Otis House Tour

    Otis House, owned by Historic New England and located at 141 Cambridge Street in Beacon Hill, is rich with stories of remarkable women, from a wealthy politician’s wife and mother in the late eighteenth century, to an entrepreneur and holistic physician in the 1830s, to four sisters who ran a Victorian boarding house.  On this tour, taking place Saturday, March 8 from 11 – 12:30, discover these stories and relevant social history of women’s lives in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.  A Mercy Otis Warren doll is pictured below.

    New Englanders have been growing decorative plants for centuries. Many large estates in the Boston area featured glass greenhouses and significant collections of camellia trees. Discover the rich history of camellia cultivation from the late 1700s through the 1900s at this illustrated lecture by Lyman Estate Greenhouse Manager Lynn Ackerman on Sunday, February 16, at 1:30 pm.  After the lecture, visit the 1804 Lyman Estate Greenhouses, enjoy our large camellia collection in bloom, and shop with advice from staff experts.  $5.     You don’t need a greenhouse to grow orchids. Learn the essentials to achieve success on your windowsill. Historic New England’s staff at the Lyman Estate Greenhouse will cover watering, fertilizer, repotting, light and selection.   • Tuesday, October 29, 6:00 pm – Seventy-Five Years Later: The Hurricane of 1938

    Historic New England, in partnership with Saylesville Friends Meeting,  will sponsor an event at the Saylesville Meeting House, 374 Great Road, Lincoln, Rhode Island, on Tuesday, October 29, with a lecture at 6 pm and reception at 7 pm. On September 21, 1938, a massive hurricane hit New York and New England, to the surprise of all residents. The Great New England Hurricane, one of the most destructive storms in American history, caused more than six hundred deaths and $400 million in property damages. What made this storm unique? In this illustrated lecture, learn about the impact and aftermath of the Hurricane of 1938 in southern New England.     Celebrate the arrival of fall with Historic New England at Cogswell’s Grant, 60 Spring Street in Essex, Massachusetts, from 11 – 4. Take a hay wagon ride through the fields to choose a jack-o’-lantern from our pumpkin patch. Decorate and carve pumpkins, compete in a pumpkin pie-eating contest, make crafts, play games, have your face painted, and try cider pressing. Enjoy hot mulled apple cider and pumpkin pie.
