  • Saturday, December 18, 10:30 am – 12:00 noon – Make Your Own Aromatherapy Heat Pad

    Join The Trustees in the heated greenhouse at the City Natives plant nursery in Mattapan on December 18 from 10:30 – noon for a hands-on herbalism class, learning how to make your own aromatherapy heat pad. Charline Xu, a local herbalist, grower, and educator will walk through the sensory benefits of different herbs and essential oils, and how to best incorporate them into your heat pad. All of the materials for making your heat pad will be provided – you only need to microwave at home for therapeutic use! Homemade heat pads, or the class it self make a great holiday gift.

    Candles, tea blends, salves and other products from Charline’s mobile apothecary, @rootsaboveground will be available for sale onsite. Participants will be invited to explore the grounds of City Natives with a cup of hot herbal tea.

  • Friday, December 10, 1:00 pm – 2:30 pm – Houseplant Holiday

    What’s the Holiday gift that keeps on giving? Plants! Whether you received one yourself or want to know what to get the person that has everything, a holiday-themed plant can’t go wrong. Join Tower Hill Botanic Garden’s December 10 workshop with Robin Selwitz as we learn about houseplant care and some tips and tricks for what kind make good gifts, how to care for them, and how to make them have a fun festive twist. We will be potting up and decorating a festive plant to take home with seasonal pot, décor, and spirit!

    Robin is an experienced, very enthusiastic gardener with over 100 plants and years of botanical experience. Her specialty is caring for houseplants, and she is a Certified Master Urban Gardener who loves to empower people to have beautiful greenery in any space they have. She truly believes that everyone can have a green thumb with the right tools and knowledge in their arsenal, and enjoys teaching others how to help their plants not just survive, but thrive. When she is not teaching about plants, she works as a Technical Trainer for a telemedicine company in Boston, and loves hiking all throughout New England and spending time with her cat, Cheddar.

  • Friday, December 1, 11:30 am – 2:30 pm – Aromatherapy Holiday Gifts

    Come to Tower Hill Botanic Garden on Friday, December 1 from 11:30 – 2:30 and enjoy an afternoon making some lovely aromatic holiday gifts. Participants will make a body butter, a relaxing or detoxifying bath salt, a holiday room freshener and a relaxing herbal dream pillow. In addition to making your home smell nice, a room freshener made with essential oils contains anti-bacterial, anti-viral and anti-septic properties which can help to keep the germs and bugs in any environment at bay during the winter months when colds and flu are common. Basic aromatherapy blending techniques will be taught as well as the benefits of using quality practitioner grade aromatherapy essential oils. You will leave with four gifts for yourself or to share with others and the knowledge to make more of these herbal products. All materials for the class will be provided as well as class notes and recipes. Tower Hill member price $50, nonmembers $60.   • Thursday, December 10, 6:30 pm – Franklin Park Photohistory Book Signing

    Meet author Julie Arrison on Thursday, December 10, at 6:30 pm, as she talks about the research and issues she uncovered while researching, collecting photos, and writing the new Franklin Park book. She’ll sign copies which will be sold for $22.00 (great for holiday gifts), at the Franklin Park Golf Clubhouse, 1 Franklin Park Road, Dorchester.  Julie is talking about problems and solutions in park management and design over the course of the park’s 130 year history. You’ll learn about how city officials, the broader public, and the Olmsted and other design firms influenced the park’s different stages of development and growth.
