  • Saturday, December 5 – Sunday, December 6 – Crane Estate Holiday Open House

    Kick off the holiday season at the Crane Estate as local florists and designers transform the Great House into a feast for the senses.

    Take a self-guided tour and enjoy cider, fresh-baked cookies, and the Gift Gallery with distinctive gifts.

    Throughout the weekend, there will be scheduled events including a tree-lighting, live music, a dance presentation, and more.

    Please consider bringing an unwrapped toy donation to the Gift Sleigh to benefit Ipswich Caring.

    Strawbery Banke in nearby Portsmouth, New Hampshire, is a beautiful place to be in the winter. Stroll through life in a simpler time as the history of American holiday traditions unfolds around you. Bring the whole family for a wholesome stroll through the sights, sounds, & smells of New England’s favorite holiday season.  These candlelight strolls will take place each Saturday and Sunday during the first three weekends in December.   • Monday, December 14, 5:30 – 8:30 pm – The Green Home

    The Green Movement has entered the mainstream and is rapidly becoming an integral part of the environment.  A Green Home (environmentally friendly) house can be more energy efficient than a traditional house.  It can be less expensive to operate, last longer, be more comfortable and be healthier than an existing home.  While many Green Homes are new construction, or require a major retro fit to an existing home, there are some relatively easy and inexpensive techniques that can be employed so you may live in a greener home environment.  This one session course will look at basic green design, green materials and will cover some incentives that can make the process of creating a Green Home environment more palatable.  You will find where to locate green materials, familiarize yourself with basic green terms, and learn the process of making your home green.

    The course is taught by David Kelman at the Boston Center for Adult Education, and costs $51 (BCAE member price $43).  You may register on line at www.bcae.org.  The class will be held Monday, December 14, from 5:30 – 8:30, but if the holiday season precludes your attendance at this time, consider signing up for the second date of Monday, February 22, 2010.

    Nantucket is particularly enchanting during the holiday season, when New England’s finest traditions come alive for the Annual Christmas Stroll Weekend, (December 4 – 6) part of Nantucket Noel (Nov. 27 – Dec. 31) a month-long celebration organized by the Nantucket Island Chamber of Commerce.  For a complete listing of events, log on to www.nantucketchamber.org.

  • November 30 – December 31 – Christmas in Newport

    Founded in 1971, Christmas in Newport began as a two-week festival that celebrated the noncommercial traditions of the holiday season. Now in its 39th year, the annual program boasts multiple activities for nearly each day of the December calendar.

    In a community collaboration among residents, businesses and the city, only clear bulbs illuminate the scenic harbor and wharves, the restored colonials of the Point and Historic Hill sections, and the Victorian splendor of Bellevue Avenue.The lights are meant to simulate candlelight, and are the brainchild of Christmas in Newport founder Ruth Myers, who wished to recapture the candlelit holidays of bygone days. With a volunteer base numbering 1500, the non-profit organization, Christmas in Newport, raises thousands of dollars for charity each year. In keeping with the true spirit of the season, any event listed in the annual program must be free of charge or must benefit a non-profit institution or charity.

  • Friday, December 4 – Sunday, December 6 – Holly Folly

    Have a Holly Folly Weekend – it’s the best time in P’town.  The festivities begin on Friday, December 4 at 5 pm at the Land’s End Holiday Gala at the Land’s End Inn, 22 Commercial Street.  Free admission.  This decade-old tradition marks the opening to the Annual Holly Folly Festival in Provincetown. Come enjoy complimentary hors d’oeuvres, cocktails, homemade cookies and great company at this annual holiday celebration open to the public and free of charge at this historic seaside inn in Provincetown’s West End.     Also on Friday night, from 6 – 8, attend the free Opening Reception for Small Works at PAAM, 460 Commercial Street, where a vibrant exhibition of artworks are offered for sale, just in time for holiday giving, in the Hoffman Gallery.

    Saturday, from 11 – 4, enjoy the Holly Folly Farmer’s Market in the Ryder Street Parking Lot, where you will  find wreaths, woodland greens, holly, pine roping, winter vegetables, jams, and other seasonal products.  The Holly Folly Sing-A-Long with Casey & Denise, from 5:30 – 8:30 pm, is also free at the Porchside Bar at the Gifford House Inn, 9 Carver Street.  Concerts and performances continue in the evening.  A Sunday cookie party concludes the festivities.

    Holly Folly in Ptown

  • Saturday, December 5, 10 am – 12:30 pm – Boxwood, Fragrant Greens and Berry Centerpiece

    Create a beautiful, long lasting fresh centerpiece for the holiday season at this workshop with Betsy Williams, taking place at Tower Hill Botanic Garden on Saturday, December 5 at 10 in the morning.  Choose an attractive pot or basket to fill with a lush arrangement of fresh boxwood, fragrant evergreens, California bay and rosemary, accented with sprays of eucalyptus berries, rose hips, pine cones and ribbons.  Greens arrangements are fun to make and, kept well watered, will last the holiday season.  Use your arrangement to decorate the dining table, entry hall, living room, kitchen, porch or doorstep.  Please bring clippers and an apron to class.  Cost $55 for Tower Hill members, $60 for non-members.  Register on-line at www.towerhillbg.org.
