  • Saturday, August 7, 10:00 am – 4:00 pm – Massachusetts Marketplace Festival

    Join the Massachusetts Horticultural Society for the Annual Massachusetts Marketplace Festival on Saturday, August 7, from 10 to 4, at Elm Bank Horticulture Center.  The event will feature the finest products from the region’s fields, farms, gardens and kitchens, with over 60 vendors offering new and locally produced food products, crafts, garden ornaments and gifts.  There will also be a plant sale and garden tours.  Admission is $6 for adults, $4 for MassHort members, and $2 for children under 12.  Tickets are available on site the day of the event.  Massachusetts Marketplace Festival is produced by MassHort with in-kind support from the Massachusetts Department of Agricultural Resources and the Massachusetts Specialty Food Association.  For more information, log on to www.masshort.org, or call  617-933-4981.

  • Thursday, November 12, 5:30 – 7:30 pm – Wild Foraged Wreaths

    The Trustees of Reservations will hold a special workshop at the Long Hill Horticulture Center on Thursday, November 12, from 5:30 to 7:30 pm. Using unusual evergreens, blueberry twigs, cones, berries, mosses, bark, and lichens from Long Hill, expert floral designer Bonnie Stafford will lead this botanically inspired workshop. Learn about the natural materials, enjoy the wreath making demonstration, and then create your own exquisite foraged wreath. All materials supplied.  Trustees members $28, non-members $35.  To register, call 978-921-1944, x 4018, or email bzschau@ttor.org.  For directions to Long Hill, log on to www.thetrustees.org.

  • Saturday, November 7, 10 am – 12 noon – Deer Resistant Plants, Winter Garden Protection, and Plants for Winter Interest

    Join The Trustees of Reservations at the Long Hill Horticulture Center in Beverly, Massachusetts for this special workshop on Saturday, November 7, from 10:00 am to noon.

    The  horticulture staff will lead a walk through the Sedgwick gardens followed by an indoor presentation to inspire all gardeners before the snow starts to fly.  They will demonstrate  methods for protecting deer favorites, show you deer resistant shrubs, and give you the best tips on winterizing your garden. The presentation will inspire you with beautiful winter gardens and remind you that you can have something blooming every month of the year, as they do in the Sedgwick Gardens.   • Thursdays, September 10 – December 10, 9 – 3 – Master Gardener Training Program

    The Massachusetts Master Gardener Association is comprised of amateur and professional horticulturalists with a mission to promote horticultural knowledge to the public through volunteerism. MMGA Master Gardeners become trained and certified through an intensive training program held at the Massachusetts Horticultural Society. The course consists of thirteen classroom and lab modules, including soil science, botany, entomology, plant pathology, pruning and propagation. Courses are conducted by both academic and industry professionals.

    12 Thursdays • September 10— December 10 • 9:00 AM – 3:00 PM
    (No class on November 26)

    Application deadline: Friday, August 1.

    If you would like to pursue acceptance into the fall 2009 Massachusetts Master Gardener Association Master Gardener Training class, please download your application and enclose it, along with a nonrefundable registration fee of $25. The tuition fee of $500 is due within two weeks of acceptance into the program.
