    Traditional gardening methods can result in lovely landscapes but come with a high price in terms of maintenance. In this March 12 Garden Club Federation of Massachusetts Horticulture Morning , Dan Jaffe invites us to rethink the old rules of gardening so we can spend less time working and more time enjoying our gardens. The class will take place at the Massachusetts Horticultural Society, 900 Washington Street, Wellesley, beginning at 10 am

    How many inches of bark mulch is needed between plants? Are there alternatives to bark mulch? Should weeds be pulled or are there other management strategies? Is it necessary to clean the garden every fall or are there habitat benefits to skipping some of the cleanup? Some gardening rules make sense; and others do not.

    Join Dan for an exploration of the rules of gardening and learn how to build beautiful, resilient, and ecologically viable gardens without the services of a full-time gardener. Dan Jaffe earned a degree in botany from the University of Maine and an advanced certificate in Native Plant Horticulture and Design from NEWFS (now the Native Plant Trust).   • Tuesday, May 15, 10:00 am – 11:30 am – Horticulture Morning with Kelly Orzel

    The Garden Club Federation of Massachusetts is excited to host Kelly Orzel, the owner at Bowery Beach Farm in Cape Elizabeth, Maine, on Tuesday, May 15 at 10 am. Want to know the secret to a garden bursting with flavor or how to design and plan your fantasy heart garden to suit your kitchen needs while composing a beautiful outdoor space? Kelly will highlight how she grows the top 12 culinary herbs and some of her lesser know favorites. She will discuss modern-day herb gardening and how it evolved from those first grown within monastery walls and formal knot gardens. You’ll get to learn how to create those intricate loops and hedges and determine which herbs will lend their scents and colors to your own backyard. It’s a jam-packed presentation that will also cover container and companion herb plantings, as well as how to create gardens for Italian, French and other cooking styles.   • Monday, February 13, 10:00 am – 12:00 noon – Seeds Up Close: Amazing!

    Enjoy the beauty of seeds and learn about plant conservation projects from Julie McIntosh Shapiro at a Horticulture Morning sponsored by the Garden Club Federation of Massachusetts on Monday, February 13, from 10 – noon at the Espousal Center in Waltham.   The Seed Herbarium Image Project, or SHIP, is an initiative of the Arnold Arboretum of Harvard University to create a web-based repository of high-resolution digital images documenting the morphology of woody plant seeds and selected fruit structures.  SHIP is headquartered at the Arboretum’s Dana Greenhouse facility and is coordinated and photographed by curatorial assistant Julie McIntosh Shapiro. The Seed Herbarium Image Project supports the work of educators and professionals in horticulture and the botanical sciences, particularly in conservation research and management of rare and endangered species. The digitized images of seeds offer an important new aid for teaching seed identification—a fundamental skill in plant propagation, hybridization, and distribution—and serve as a resource for nurserymen, horticulturists, botanical curators, taxonomists, ecologists, and the general public. SHIP also provides an online resource for botanical institutions and nurseries to verify their collections and inventories. SHIP is made possible through the generous support of the Stanley Smith Horticultural Trust, Cabot Family Charitable Trust, and the J. Frank Schmidt Family Charitable Foundation.  A $5 donation is requested.
