    At the end of the summer, what do you do with all those special patio plants that you have fussed over for the summer months? This Berkshire Botanical class on September 18 at 11 am will give gardeners tricks of the trade to protect their tender perennials, house plants, woody potted specimens and succulent collections and encourage them to thrive during the winter season. Taught by Jenna O’Brien, topics of this class will include cultivation, fertilizing, watering and healthcare. Learn by doing and take home some plant companions.

    Jenna O’Brien, owner and founder of Viridissima Horticulture & Design since 2003, has been working in Berkshire gardens for over 20 years. Jenna specializes in container gardening, perennial garden design and care, and country estate garden management.

  • Thursday, January 26, 7:00 pm – 8:30 pm – Growing Container Succulents

    The Massachusetts Horticultural Society will hold a class taught by Carrie Waterman on Container Succulents on Thursday, January 26 from 7 – 8:30 in the Parkman Room of the Education Building at Elm Bank, 900 Washington Street in Wellesley.  She will bring a selection of succulents to show the range of these special plants.  She will also discuss the best species to keep in containers and how to care for and propagate your own succulents.  $12 for Mass Hort members, $20 for nonmembers.  Register online at www.masshort.org.  Image from www.armstronggarden.com.

  • Thursday, January 28, 7:00 pm – 8:30 pm – Houseplant Success

    Let Dr. Paul Steen give you an overview of the practical side of houseplant culture, on Thursday, January 28 from 7 – 8:30 at Massachusetts Horticultural Society’s Parkman Room, 900 Washington Street in Wellesley. He will discuss what can go wrong with houseplants and how to prevent these problems from occurring. And how to care for your plants that they flower and re-flower year-after-year. Come for a great list of tips and ideas that help the average houseplant grower. He will focus on proper light, water and temperature requirements for popular houseplants.   • Wednesday, September 30, 7:00 pm – 8:30 pm – Winter-Growing House Plants

    Over the years, Art Scarpa has assembled a collection of plants that extend the growing season to year round. They include camellias, clivias, tropical and hardy bulbs, jasmines, cyclamens, primroses, Living Stones from South Africa and many more. On Wednesday, September 30 at 7 pm at Tower Hill Botanic Garden, he will give tips on how to fill a bright but cold breezeway, balcony or deck with living plants for winter interest and color.

    Art Scarpa has been growing unusual plants all his life and his hobby greenhouse is filled to the eaves with plants that reflect his diverse interests. His curiosity has taken him to many exciting places to view them in their natural habitats, such as the US south and southwest, Hawaii, Europe, Australia, South America and South Africa. Now retired, Art is busier than ever, sharing his experiences and horticultural knowledge with others at flower shows, arboreta, garden clubs and fairs all over the northeast. $20 for Tower Hill members, $30 for nonmembers.   • Saturday, May 15, 8:30 am – 11:00 am – Perennial Plant Sale

    The Brockton Garden Club will hold a Perennial Plant Sale on Saturday, May 15, from 8:30 am – 11:00 am at the Brockton Park Department headquarters, 45 Meadow Lane in Brockton (former site of the Campello Swimming Pool).  See new plants, old favorites, perennials, shrubs, herbs, ground covers, grasses, house plants and more.  The Scholarship Committee will have hardy geraniums for sale in a veriety of colors.  Proceeds fund the Brockton Garden Club’s city-wide Civic Projects and Scholarship Fund.  For more information and directions, log on to www.brocktongc.org.

  • Saturday, April 3, 9 am – noon – Pruning Basics

    Learn the why’s and how’s of pruning – why to prune, if you even need to prune, when to prune, and what cuts to make.  Wellesley College Botanic Gardens Senior Horticulturist Tricia Diggins teaches you to make cutting edge decisions about nearly every pruning job from house plants to large tres.  She explores with you how these general principles relate to specific plants like flowering shrubs, evergreens, older trees, young plants and fruit trees.  Approximately half the class time will be indoors and the remaiinder will be outside in the Hunnewell Arboretum and Alexandra Botanic Gardens, looking at the pruning needs of a variety of trees and shrubs.  The Wellesley College Hunnewell Arboretum can be damp under foot in early spring.  Please dress appropriately for the weather.  Class number HOR 10 080, WCFH members $20, non members $25.  To register, or for directions, log on to www.wellesley.edu/WCFH, or email horticulture@wellesley.edu.
