    So you think you have a black thumb? Think again! Learn the most important basics of houseplant care from lighting to watering, repotting, and fertilizing. Discover what plants might do best in your home, and how to troubleshoot pests and diseases.

    This Chicago Botanic Garden class will be taught online via Zoom. All registrations must be submitted online two days before your class starts. Registered students will receive login instructions one day in advance. The class will take place Monday, January 27 from 7:30 – 9:00 Eastern. $24 for CBG members, $30 for nonmembers.     Come to the Lyman Estate Greenhouses, 185 Lyman Street in Waltham on January 18 from 9:30 to 4 for a great retail experience. This new exotic houseplant sale features begonias and gesneriads.   • Saturday, February 3, 10:00 am – 12:00 noon – Houseplant Healthcare Clinic

    As the days begin to lengthen and thoughts turn toward spring, beloved and sometimes bedraggled houseplants also yearn for more light and warmth. The pressures of being inside can take a toll on even the most robust plants. On February 3, from 10 a.m. to noon, Plant Connector will guide participants in the basics of good house plant health care, from identifying pests and problems to the preventive steps that will ensure that prized plants make it through the winter. Students are invited to bring along a house plant they have questions about or one to which they’d like to give some extra TLC. Consider this a spa day for your houseplants. The venue is Berkshire Botanical Garden in West Stockbridge, and the cost is $25 for BBG members, $40 for nonmembers. Register at www.berkshirebotanical.org

    Noting the number of urban dwellers who want more plants in their lives but don’t have green thumbs yet, plant consultant and former elementary educator Maryah Greene stepped up to provide support so these new plant parents can create functional, long-term green spaces of their own. She’ll share how she turned an Instagram account full of plant care tips and tricks into Greene Piece, a Brooklyn-based business that provides individualized repotting workshops, plant problem diagnosis, full-service interior plant design, and more.     What’s the Holiday gift that keeps on giving? Plants! Whether you received one yourself or want to know what to get the person that has everything, a holiday-themed plant can’t go wrong. Join Tower Hill Botanic Garden’s December 10 workshop with Robin Selwitz as we learn about houseplant care and some tips and tricks for what kind make good gifts, how to care for them, and how to make them have a fun festive twist. We will be potting up and decorating a festive plant to take home with seasonal pot, décor, and spirit!

    Robin is an experienced, very enthusiastic gardener with over 100 plants and years of botanical experience. Her specialty is caring for houseplants, and she is a Certified Master Urban Gardener who loves to empower people to have beautiful greenery in any space they have. She truly believes that everyone can have a green thumb with the right tools and knowledge in their arsenal, and enjoys teaching others how to help their plants not just survive, but thrive. When she is not teaching about plants, she works as a Technical Trainer for a telemedicine company in Boston, and loves hiking all throughout New England and spending time with her cat, Cheddar.

  • Thursday, March 12, 6:30 pm – 8:00 pm – Holiday Houseplant Hangover

    Did you receive plants as gifts over the holidays? Are they looking a bit sad at this point and are you wondering whatever to do with them? Or are you simply a houseplant hoarder whose enthusiasm has waned with the winter months? If yes, let plant propagator and horticulturist Sean Halloran raise your plants—and your hopes—up a notch. In this March 12 Arnold Arboretum class, beginning at 6:30 pm in the Hunnewell Building, Sean will share tips for getting your plants back on track to becoming home enhancements instead of embarrassments. In advance, email close-up photos of your plants and plant problems so that Sean can be sure to address specific horticultural challenges you may be facing.
