  • Saturday, April 7, 8:30 am – 3:00 pm – Celebrating Herbs!

    The Herb Society of America, New England Unit, will sponsor Celebrating Herbs!, a symposium to be held Saturday, April 7, from 8:30 – 3 at the Hunnewell Carriage House, The Gardens at Elm Bank, in Wellesley. Speakers will include Kelly Orzel, Judith Sumner, and Betsy Williams.

    Betsy Williams will present Herbal Weddings: Old Traditions, Modern Uses. An herbal wedding is the essence of romance! The perfumed air, the delightful colors and the ancient symbolism of the plants blend to create a truly magical day. The program includes the stories and traditions of wedding herbs and the language of flowers, cultural directions for growing the herbs, garden design suggestions and how to use herbs and herbal flowers creatively in wedding flowers, food and drink.     Judith Sumner is a botanist and popular lecturer at the Arnold Arboretum, Garden in the Woods, and Assumption College. She is the author of American Household Botany, a History of Useful Plants, 1620 – 1900, and The Natural History of Medicinal Plants.

    Kelly Orzel, of Bowery Beach Farm at Cape Elizabeth, Maine, specializes in culinary and scented plants including 50 varieties of scented pelargoniums. The Backyard Gardener is her recent book.

    The early bird fee for Herb Society members is $85, $90 for non-HSA members, postmarked on or before March 10. All registrations after March 24 are $105, and registration closes March 28. No walk-ins. Registration includes coffee/tea and morning refreshments, plus a catered herbal lunch. The New England Unit of The Herb Society of America, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) educational organization.   • Tuesday, May 2, 9:30 am – Ikebana Demonstration

  • Thursday, April 11, 10:00 am – Fabulous Gardens That Inspired Floral Designs

    The Metro District Annual Meeting will be held on Thursday, April 11 at 10:00 AM. at Elm Bank in the Hunnewell Carriage House. Elm Bank is located at 900 Washington Street, (Route 16), Wellesley, Massachusetts.  Our featured speaker, Thelma Shoneman, a nationally accredited Master Flower Show Judge, will be presenting a program, Fabulous Gardens that Inspired Floral Designs. Thelma recently visited six fabulous gardens in Oregon, Nebraska, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts and Maine. Thelma will speak about each garden and the unique attraction that inspired the “floral souvenir”! Each arrangement that she creates will include a different leaf manipulation, which she will demonstrate. These arrangements will be raffled at the end of the program.
    The luncheon will be catered by Baker’s Best of Newton and the charge for the luncheon is $25 per person. Checks should be made out to GCFM. For each attendee please list their name, email address, and their choice of lunch sandwich: chicken salad, roasted vegetable or turkey. Tell us if an attendee has special dietary restrictions.   • Tuesday, October 18, 10:00 am – 12:30 pm (Corrected Time) – Genius of Place

    The True North Author Series, a joint presentation of the Library of the Massachusetts Horticultural Society and North Hill, opens Tuesday, October 18 at 10 am  with Justin Martin, the author of Genius of Place: The Life of Frederick Law Olmsted, a biography of the pioneering landscape architect of Central Park and 50 other green spaces around the United States. There will be no charge to attend the event, which will be held in the Hunnewell Carriage House at Elm Bank.  Martin, a former staff writer at Fortune magazine, is the author of two previous biographies, Greenspan: The Man Behind Money and Nader: Crusader, Spoiler, Icon.   • Wednesday, July 28, 6:30 pm – 8:00 pm – Hostas

    On July 28, former New England Hosta Society President Mary Arnberg will bring a long time of love for hostas (and a lot of samples) to Elm Bank to discuss what makes hostas such a terrific plant for the home gardener, as part of MassHort’s Wednesday Evenings at Elm Bank series. There are more than 4,000 named varieties of hosta and Mary will present examples of hosta lovers’ favorites, as well as other varieties to appeal to gardeners with either sun or shade conditions.

    Sessions begin at 6:30 and go until 8 p.m. or until the last question has been answered. All sessions are held at Elm Bank, either in the Hunnewell carriage house or the Education Building. MassHort members pay $8 per session. The cost for non-members is $10. Refreshments are offered.  For more information log on to www.masshort.org.
