Sunday, November 3, 2:00 pm – 3:30 pm – Make Nature Art Like Andy Goldsworthy

Use the freshly fallen leaves at the Arnold Arboretum to make beautiful art, just like the famed nature artist Andy Goldsworthy. This is a chance to play in the leaves and make something beautiful– even if it only lasts until the next gust of wind!

We will meet on Sunday, November 3 at 2 pm in front of the Hunnewell Visitor Center and then walk to the maple collection, collecting materials along the way.

Accessibility: This program involves a short walk over paved roads to the grassy maple collection.

Audience: This program is suitable for all ages.

Inclement weather policy: Participants will be notified via email at least 24 hours in advance if a program needs to be cancelled due to inclement weather, and will be notified by phone if a program must be cancelled with less than 24 hours’ notice. Click here to view our full inclement weather policy. If you have questions about the status of a program, please email publicprograms@arnarb.harvard.edu or call the Visitor Center desk between 10:00am and 4:00pm at (617) 384-5209.

Through Tuesday, October 2 – Continuation: Seasons at the Arboretum

Jim Harrison worked for the Arnold Arboretum of Harvard University in 2008, photographing the landscape through four full seasons. After that year, he returned, worked at his own pace, and expanded his perspective. For him, the Arboretum became a living, ever changing laboratory in which to explore the simple but fundamental act of observation.

Harrison photographed in rain and snow, at dawn and dusk, even working on days when the beauty of the Arboretum seemed less obvious, or in some cases all too obvious. In time, he also began to see plants in relation to their surroundings. The photographs in this exhibition will encourage viewers to think in new ways about both the place and the process. His show, Continuation: Seasons at the Arboretum, will be on view in the Hunnewell Building Lecture Hall through October 2.

Note: For exhibition availability, refer to Hunnewell Visitor Center hours at https://www.arboretum.harvard.edu/visit/hours-services-and-policies/.

Friday, October 23, 5:00 pm – 7:00 pm – Turning Wood: The Art of the Woodturner

Woodturning has a history dating back to 1300 BC Egypt. Unique in relation to most woodworking due to its use of a lathe, woodturners turn out practical, functional pieces or “turn” to the purely aesthetic.

Three woodturning associations, The Association of Revolutionary Turners (ART), Central New England Woodturners, and Massachusetts South Shore Woodturners, have come together for this very special Arnold Arboretum exhibition, bringing their own creativity and technical expertise and displaying unique pieces for utilitarian use and aesthetic enjoyment. Join us as turners demonstrate their skill working the lathe throughout the week-end of October 24 – 25, and attend the opening reception on Friday, October 23, from 5 – 7 in the Hunnewell Building Lecture Hall. Select work will also be on display in the Hunnewell Visitor Center October 9 through November 8. Free, no registration required.

Sunday, May 11, 10:00 am – 4:00 pm – Lilac Sunday

Of the thousands of flowering plants in the Arnold Arboretum, only one, the lilac, is singled out each year for a daylong celebration.  Tours of the lilacs and other special collections, live music, family activities, food vendors and picnicking (on this special day only), make for a memorable day. Be a part of this beloved Boston tradition on Sunday, May 11! The Arboretum is open as usual from dawn to dusk. Refreshments and activities are available from 10:00am to 4:00pm.

Parking:
Street parking along the Arboretum perimeter is limited and visitors are advised to take public transportation. No unauthorized vehicles will be allowed within the gates during the event.

Accessibility:
Some parking spaces outside the gates will be designated for special-needs visitors. A limited number of wheelchairs are available on a first-come, first-served basis at information tents in three locations: in front of the Hunnewell Visitor Center, inside the Forest Hills Gate, and inside the Centre Street Gate. They may not be reserved in advance.  While you are in the neighborhood, we invite you to visit local shops and restaurants in Jamaica Plain and Roslindale.  For more Lilac Sunday information call the Arnold Arboretum at 617.524.1718.  Syringa Bloomerang (reg. trademark) pictured below available from www.whiteflowerfarm.com.
