  • Tuesdays, February 2 – March 2, 6:15 pm – 8:15 pm – Introduction to Hydroponics, Online

    Explore how to grow plants without soil using hydroponics, which promotes fast growth and requires less water and space than conventional gardens, in this New York Botanical Garden online series beginning February 2 and continuing through March 2, from 6:15 – 8:15 Eastern time, online. You’ll learn what systems work best, which plants to choose, and how to make sure they get proper nutrition. While we will focus primarily on home-scale systems, the wider applications of hydroponics will also be discussed. The instructors are Maya Kutz and Kate Lodvikov, and the fee is $195 for NYBG members, $215 for nonmembers. Register and see the full schedule HERE.

  • Saturday, January 12, 1:00 pm – 3:00 pm – Worm’s Way Hydroponics 101

    Did you resolve to grow your own food this year? Come join Worm’s Way Massachusetts, 121 Worcester Providence Turnpike in Sutton, Massachusetts on Saturday, January 12 at 1 for the first Hydro 101 class of 2013! Hydroponics is the art of growing without soil, and instead focusing on water, oxygen, and direct nutrient feeding. This results in higher yields and faster growth. Throughout our class series, our awesome staff will guide you through the basics of setting up a hydroponics system, using nutrients, lighting, and more! Free.     Tower Hill Botanic Garden, 11 French Drive, Boylston, Massachusetts, will host Tom Dzaugis of Green Path Garden Supply on Saturday, February 12, from 10 – 11:30, for an Introduction to Hydroponics. Grow vegetables all year long! This class will cover the basics of hydroponics, which is simply growing plants in a non-soil growing medium. This can be a very simple and effective way to grow vegetables which can yield amazing results. We will cover the different growing mediums available, why pH is important, the difference between fertilizers for soil and hydroponics, and lighting. The class will conclude with a Q&A discussion.  Fee for the class is $10 for THBG members, $12 for non-members, and you may register on line at www.towerhillbg.org.

    After last year’s excessive rain and crop failures caused by the pathogen late blight, it makes sense to grow vegetables in a more controlled environment. This class will cover the basics of growing vegetables using hydroponics, which is simply growing plants in a non-soil growing medium. This can be a very simple and effective way to grow vegetables which can yield amazing results.  Instructor Tom Dzaugis of Green Path Garden Supply in Northboro will cover the different growing mediums available, why pH is in important in hydroponics, the difference between fertilizers for soil and hydroponics, and lighting. We will conclude with a Q&A discussion on how to put all this information together and have success growing plants hydroponically.  The class will take place at Tower Hill Botanic Garden, 11 French Drive in Boylston, Massachusetts, costs $6 for member of THBG, $8 for non-members, and you may register on line at www.towerhillbg.org.
