  • Saturday, February 21, 10:00 am – 12:00 noon – Winter Tree Identification

    Break up the winter doldrums by getting outside and learning winter tree identification from Polly Hill Arboretum Director of Grounds & Facilities, Ian Jochems. Participants will learn how to use the characteristics of bark, twigs, buds, and more to identify common deciduous and evergreen trees.

  • Saturday, January 24, 10:00 am – 11:00 am – Polly Hill Arboretum Seasonal Staff-Led Tour

    For the first seasonal tour of the Polly Hill Arboretum in Martha’s Vineyard of 2026, take a walk through the Arboretum Woods with PHA Director of Grounds & Facilities, Ian Jochems. Ian will discuss basic tree identification; a primer for his in-depth Winter Tree ID workshop on February 21! The walk is included with the $5 admission fee (free for PHA members). Meet at the Arboretum Visitors Center.

  • Tuesday, June 15, 1:00 pm – 2:30 pm – Garden Bed Maintenance

    Need a little help with your garden beds? Join Polly Hill Arboretum Grounds Manager/Arborist Ian Jochems to learn how we maintain our garden beds at different times of the year. Ian will demonstrate how we cut bed edges, different weeding strategies, and how we make and use a variety of mulches. We will also cover some basic tool uses and plant maintenance. There will be a chance to try out tools and ask questions.

    This class will be held in person on June 15 at 1 pm at the Arboretum, 795 State Road in West Tisbury. Class sizes are limited to help prevent the spread of COVID-19, and allow for social distancing. Registration is required. $15 for PHA members, $30 for nonmembers.

  • Tuesday, June 8, 2:00 pm – 3:00 pm – Rhododendrons Walk & Talk

    Join PHA Grounds Manager/Arborist Ian Jochems on June 8 at 2 pm for a Looking Together tour with a focus on beautiful Rhododendron blooms! On this tour, Ian will highlight colorful Rhododendron blooms around the Arboretum. He’ll share tips on growing Rhododendron and stories of some of Polly Hill’s favorites.  Looking Together tours run the 2nd and 4th Tuesday of the month, May through September, 2-3pm. Tour sizes are limited to help prevent the spread of COVID-19, and allow for social distancing. Registration is required. Tours are free with $5 admission/free for members.

    Learn more about the Arboretum and its plant collections on guided walks led by knowledgeable staff and docents. These specialized tours are designed to offer an in-depth experience, each focusing on a different aspect of the Arboretum. Meet at the Visitor Center.

    Join Polly Hill Arboretum Grounds Manager/Arborist Ian Jochems on August 21 for an informative and fun evening walking tour of the many glorious mature trees of Edgartown. Among the hydrangeas and picket fences, many unique and fine specimen trees await discovery. As one past participant noted, “I will forever after see the town’s trees with new eyes and greater appreciation.” Sponsored by Donaroma’s Nursery and Landscape Services. $20 ($15 for PHA members). Join PHA Horticulturist/Arborist Ian Jochems on Wednesday, August 2 at 10 am for an informative and fun walking tour of the many glorious mature trees of Edgartown. In the midst of the mantle of green that envelops downtown Edgartown, among the hydrangeas and picket fences, many unique and fine specimen trees await discovery.
