  • Sunday, March 10, 3:00 pm – 4:30 pm – Celebrating 550 Years of Ikenobo Ikebana

    The Japan Society of Boston and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston present The 2013 Rad Smith Program in Art: Celebrating 550 Years of Ikenobo Ikebana, featuring 45th Generation Headmaster Sen’ei Ikenobo and 46th Generation Headmaster Designate Yuki Ikenobo, on Sunday, March 10, from 3 – 4:30 at the Remis Auditorium of the Museum of Fine Arts. Commemorate the auspicious occasion of the 550th year since Ikenobo, a highlight of Japanese aesthetics, first appeared in public records. Ikenobo is the original school fo Ikebana, Japanese traditional flower arranging. The 45th Generation Headmaster, Sen’ei Ikenobo, talks briefly about Ikebana and Japanese traditional culture, and 46th Generation Headmaster Designate, Yuki Ikenobo, presents an Ikebana demonstration. Followed by a Mawari-ike ceremony, a traditional Ikebana-judged competition.  Tickets ($15 MFA members, seniors and students, $18 non members)  are available on line at www.mfa.org.

  • Saturday, October 13, 10:00 am – 12:00 noon – Make It & Take It: Basic Floral Design 101

    Instructor Laurie Marino will give a class at the Boston Center for Adult Education, 122 Arlington Street, on Saturday, October 13 from 10 – 12.  Tuition is $30 for BCAE members, $35 for non-members, and there is an additional materials cost of $18. Lose the bland bouquets and learn to create floral designs with flair! Using a step-by-step method, you will learn how to choose and process your flowers and what tools and containers work best to create arrangements that boast a distinctive visual appeal. We’ll explore the color, texture, and variety of spring flowers, and discuss the myriad styles of floral design, such as the English garden, Ikebana, symmetrical and asymmetrical design.  Register at www.bcae.org.

  • Friday, October 12 , 2012, 9:30 am – Sogetsu Massachusetts Branch 40th Anniversary Celebration

    Sogetsu Massachusetts Branch will celebrate its 40th anniversary with a Demonstration by Tetsunori Kanawa on Friday, October 12 beginning at 9:30 am at NewBridge on the Charles, Dedham, near Exit 17 off Route 95.  Mr. Kawana has been engaged in the study and transformation of Sogetsu Ikebana for over 30 years,  Hiroshi Teshigahara, the renowned artist, film director and third headmaster of Sogetsu inspired the artistic spirit and vision that continue to guid Mr. Kawana.  He has ventured beyond classic Sogetsu ikebana art into the realm of large scale bamboo installations (see below, from denver.about.com), stage design, and exhibition design.  his numerous private exhibitions, installations and demonstrations in Asia, Europe and North America have taken ikebana far beyond its Japanese origins.  Through his workshops Kawana Sensei has conveyed his passion and deep understanding of Sogetsu ikebana to may practitioners, leading them into a richer and more profound world.  In 2002 Mr. Kawana gave a demonstration in Boston that was an artistic tour de force.  The arrangements ranged from whimsical to cutting edge to inspiring.  In 2007 he worked with members of the Boston chapter that was part of its New England Flower Show display.  His creations have graced botanical gardens, museums, department stores, and palaces all over the world.  The public is invited to attend ($20 each, Mass branch members free) by pre-registration prior to September 15.  Please make your check payable to Sogetsu Mass Branch and mail to Mrs. Dora Lee at 8 Dartmouth Avenue, Needham, MA 02494.  For more information about the workshops and banquet (Mass branch members only) or joining, email Tomoko Tanaka at tomoko_tanaka@comcast.net, or Mabel Nevins at mrnevins@comcast.net.

    Sogetsu Ikebana is an internationally recognized school of Japanese flower arranging. In this class, you will learn the essentials of this venerable art from Garden Club of the Back Bay member Kaye Vosburgh, who for many years has exhibited and taught Sogetsu Ikebana in Massachusetts, New York, and several other states. Kaye provides the flowers for each class and will have supplies and equipment for purchase by students who wish them.   • Wednesday, April 4, 10:00 am – Ikebana Demonstration with Kaye Vosburgh

    See the art of Ikebana, Japanese floral design, utilizing spring plant materials. Ikebana Instructor of the Sogetsu School Kaye Vosburgh will explain the technique to both novice and experienced students in this linear form of flower arranging. This Garden Club of the Back Bay meeting will be held at The College Club, 44 Commonwealth Avenue, Boston, on Wednesday, April 4, beginning at 10 am, and will be followed by an optional lunch.     Ms. Vosburgh, a member of The Garden Club of the Back Bay as well as Noannet Garden Club, has studied, exhibited and taught in Massachusetts, New York, Japan and Ecuador. She is also a Master Judge in the Federated Garden Clubs and a First Grade Ikebana Teacher in the Sogetsu School. A frequent speaker at flower shows and with garden clubs, Kaye and has earned numerous awards for her designs including the two top awards in the 2008 Boston Flower Show’s Molten Lava category.

  • Friday, October 28 – Sunday, October 30 – Ikebana International Show

    The Third Annual Ikebana Show at Tower Hill will take place Friday, October 28 through Sunday, October 30, at Tower Hill Botanic Garden, 11 French Drive, Boylston.  Hours are Friday, 12 – 5, Saturday 9 – 5, and Sunday 9 – 4.  Sponsored by the Ikebana International of Boston, the show will feature the Japanese art of flower arrangement, also known at “kado” or “the way of flowers”.  Trained Ikebana designers will install arrangements throughout the Stoddard Center.  Enjoy guided tours each day, and  there will be one hour Ikebana demonstrations in the theater.  Educational videos will air in the theater throughout the show, as well.  Admission is included with admission to Tower Hill ($10 adults, $7 seniors, $5 youth, and free with Tower Hill membership).  For more information, call 508-869-6111, or email thbg@towerhillbg.org.  Our own Kaye Vosburgh, who will present an ikebana program to The Garden Club of the Back Bay this spring as part of our Japan Year, is pictured below.

    Eikou Sumura, a Sogetsu master instructor from Tokyo, Japan, will present a flower arranging demonstration and workshop sponsored by The Japan Society of Boston.   • Thursday, July 15 – Sunday, July 18 – The 27th Annual Black Ships Festival

    The Black Ships Festival in Newport, Rhode Island, to be held July 15 – 18, offers a variety of events that emphasize both Japanese art and culture. Events include a formal Gala, Japanese Arts & Crafts such as Origami and Ikebana; Martial Arts, and a Japanese Tea Ceremony. A highlight will be the Taiko Drums! Of special interest to flower lovers is a demonstration at 12:30 pm on Saturday, July 17 at the Brick Market of origami bonsai, where artist, author and inventor Benjamin John Coleman will demonstrate his “makigami” paper rolling technique which he uses to make branches for his origami bonsai trees (this demonstration is repeated Sunday at 11:30 am and 2:00 pm).
