  • Tuesdays, April 6 – 27, 6:30 – 8:30 pm – Growing Vegetables in the City

    Abby Hird, Putnam Fellow at the Arnold Arboretum, will give a three session class in the Hunnewell Building of the Arnold Arboretum on Tuesdays, April 6, 13 and 27, from 6:30 – 8:30 pm.   Learn the where, what, and why of urban vegetable gardening with horticulturist Abby Hird. Raised on a Nebraska farm, educated in horticulture, and now living here in Boston, Abby Hird will talk about her gardening adaptations in the city environment. She will guide you through site evaluation, plant selection, and common problems and possible solutions in raising home-grown food. She’ll also talk about community resources for gardening, ideas for maximizing yield from a small plot, as well as ways to grow food more sustainably. This class is for nascent gardeners and those who have been frustrated by previous run-ins with vegetables.  Fee $60 Arnold Arboretum member, $72 nonmember.   • Wednesday, December 2, 4:00 – 6:00 pm – Designing an Ecological Home and Landscape

    Join Marie Stella and Aran Byrnes to explore the process of creating an ecological and sustainable home and landscape that features environmental awareness, reduced energy consumption, sustainability, and innovative uses of plant material.
    Marie and Aran will introduce us to Beaver Lodge, Marie’s LEED platinum certified home and teaching facility, and invite us to explore the process of building an energy efficient, sustainable home and integrating it with a responsibly managed landscape.
    They will highlight the ecological elements of Beaver Lodge such as rain gardens, buffer zones, a vegetated roof, and green architecture. This presentation will motivate and encourage us to blend landscape, art, and technology for a more sustainable future.  Sponsored by the Ecological Landscaping Association, www.ecolandscaping.org, the program will take place in Nordic Hall (below) at the Scandinavian Living Center, 206 Waltham Street, West Newton, Massachusetts.  Cost is $20 for ELA Members, $25 for non-members.

  • Friday, December 4 – Sunday, December 6 – Christmas in Salem

    The 2009 Legacy Tour, sponsored by Historic Salem, Inc.,  steps back in history, featuring 18th and 19th century homes in the Salem Common Neighborhood.  A Candlelight Tour will begin Friday, December 4, from 5:30 – 7:30 pm.  On Saturday, December 5, the tour will be open from 10:00 am – 4:30 pm, and on Sunday, December 6, from 11:30 am – 4:30 pm.  There is a Snow Date: Saturday, December 12, from 10:00 am to 4:30 pm.

    It’s Historic Salem’s 65th anniversary, and Christmas in Salem’s 30th holiday house tour. What better way to mark these milestones than with a Christmas house tour that includes historically significant sites on or near this year’s route, which is centered around the Salem Common neighborhood.

    Christmas in Salem will indeed be bigger and better than ever, starting with this website to let you know all about tour features in advance. And there’s lots to share, including information about other holiday events taking place in Salem.
