  • Saturday, January 23, 2:00 pm – Coyote at the Kitchen Door

    Wildlife biologist Stephen Destefano’s newest book, Coyote at the Kitchen Door, and the work of photographer Amy Stein both address the blurred boundary between human life and wildlife in modern society.

    Bears, deer, fox, coyote and birds are increasingly encroaching upon areas considered to be ‘ours’.  On Saturday, January 23, beginning at 2 pm, they’ll discuss how they approach this intersection, each from his/her own perspective.     This event is presented by and held at the Harvard Museum of Natural History in conjunction with a new exhibition, opening January 22, 2010, of striking, large-scale color photographs by New York-based visual artist Amy Stein. Domesticated: Modern Dioramas of our New Natural History, explores the tenuous relationship between humans and animals as human civilization increasingly encroaches upon nature. The exhibit will be on display at the Harvard Museum of Natural History through April 18, 2010.

  • Saturday, July 19, 10 – 11:30 a.m. – Herbs in The Country of the Pointed Firs

    Landscape Gardener Nancy Wetzel takes a fascinating look at medicinal herbs, the historic importance of community herbalists, and herb gardens through the lens of author Sarah Orne Jewett’s 1896 book The Country of the Pointed Firs. Visiting Historic New England’s Sarah Orne Jewett House at 5 Portland Street in South Berwick, Maine is a special treat, and to see the home in combination with this presentation is an extraordinary opportunity.  Writer Sarah Orne Jewett spent much of her life in this stately Georgian residence, owned by her family since 1819. The view from her desk in the second-floor hall surveys the town’s major intersection and provided her with material for her books, such as The Country of the Pointed Firs, which describe the character of the Maine countryside and seacoast with accuracy and affection.   • Saturday, June 27, 9:30 – 3:30 – Dennis Garden Tour

    The Village Garden Club of Dennis will sponsor a self guided tour  on Saturday, June 27, from 9:30 – 3:30.    The tour features eight gardens in Dennis, East Dennis and South Dennis. Throughout the tour, visitors will have an opportunity to enjoy a unique boutique, flower arranging demonstrations, yoga demonstrations and a local artist at work.

    Tickets can be purchased in advance for $15.00 at the Dennis Chamber of Commerce and Rose Victorian in W. Dennis, and Barn & Co. and Mill Stone Pottery in Dennis Village. On the day of the tour, tickets can be purchased for $20.00 at the Gazebo in Dennis at the intersection of Route 6A and Old Bass River Rd.
