    Those of you not attending the Garden Club of the Back Bay’s Twilight Garden Party on Thursday (and why not, we ask?) should head over to Goddard House, 165 Chestnut Street in Brookline, on Thursday, June 4 at 5:30 pm for the Urban Herb & Garden Fest sponsored by Goddard House & Green City Growers.  Join them for light fare (fresh herb flatbreads, wine and beer), create your own potted herb garden to take home, watch and hear a slide show and talk on the current state of urban agriculture in greater Boston by GCG founder and CEO and past Garden Club of the Back Bay speaker Jessie Banhazl, and learn how you can get involved in creative growing systems and new technologies.  Free, but please RSVP to Brandon Fisher at 617-731-8500, x 130, or email bfisher@goddardhouse.org.

    Urban farming is taking off in some of the most densely populated places around Greater Boston in interesting, unexpected ways. Learn about the ever-changing landscape of growing technologies that is making this possible and how to apply these techniques at home or in your community. Jessie Banhazl, CEO and founder of Green City Growers, will join The Garden Club of the Back Bay at The College Club, 44 Commonwealth Avenue, Boston, on Wednesday, February 11 at 10 am for this informative talk. Green City Growers are experienced and passionate organic urban farmers who specialize in year-round raised bed urban farms for yards, rooftops, decks, and unused lots. They maintain production-level urban farms for hotels, grocers, and restaurants, and pioneer farming education programs for businesses, municipalities, homeowners and schools.     Work with Jessie Banhazl, owner of Green City Growers, a raised bed vegetable gardening company, to learn how to make the most of the New England growing season.  The Tower Hill Botanic Garden class will be held Saturday, March 10, from 10 – 12, and you may register online at www.towerhillbg.org.  THBG member fee is $10, nonmembers $12.  Come prepared to chat about your garden and make a four season plan for producing food all year long.

  • Thursday, November 10, 8:30 am – 4:30 pm – ELA Season’s End Summit

    Join the Ecological Landscaping Association on Thursday, November 10 from 8:30 – 4:30 at the Doyle Center in Leominster for two end of season panels, a locally sourced lunch, and networking.  The morning panel of Ecological success stories is “Hits and Near Misses” with landscape designers Julie Meyer, Rebecca Lindenmeyr, and Laura Kuhn, who will share their expertise and projects that demonstrate ecological landscapes with maximum aesthetic appeal, balancing ecological ideals and meeting client expectations, and lessons learned when obstacles occur.  The afternoon panel, “Hot New Services to Grow Your Business”, will be moderated by Risa Edelstein, and will feature Trevor Smith of Land Escapes on “Expanding Landscape Options with Living Walls,” Jessie Banhazl of Green City Growers (below) on “Taking Edible Landscapes to New Heights,” and Chris Rawlings of Waterhouse Pools and Ponds on “Natural Swimming Ponds.”  $55 for ELA members, $75 for non-members.  For more information, and to register, call 617-436-5838, or email ela.info@comcast.net.

    Harvard Pilgrim Health Care has teamed up with the Museum of Science to present a free screening of the critically acclaimed film FOOD, INC., by noted documentarian Robert Kenner.  Narrated by experts Eric Schlosser (Fast Food Nation) and Michael Pollan (The Omnivore’s Dilemma, In Defense of Food: An Eater’s Manifesto), and featuring interviews with forward-thinking entrepreneurs such as Gary Hirshberg of Stonyfield Farm and Joel Salatin of Pollyface, Inc,, FOOD, INC. reveals surprising, shocking truths about what we eat, how it is produced, who we become as a nation, and where we go from here.  The screening will be at the Museum of Science’s Cahners Theater, and the doors will open at 1:15 pm.  A panel discussion will follow with Gary Hirshberg, Chairman, President, and CEO of Stonyfield Farm, Jody Adams, James Beard award-winning Chef/Owner of Rialto, and Jessie Banhazl, Owner and Co-Founder of Green City Growers.
