  • Thursday, January 24, 11:00 am – Rosecliff-Hangers: Stories from the Rose Garden

    Jim Donahue, Preservation Society of Newport County Curator of Historic Landscapes & Horticulture, presents Rosecliff-Hangers on Thursday, January 24 at 11.

    Join us at the newly refurbished Rosecliff rose garden in Newport for tales of intrigue and murder, part of the long and complicated history of the property. Hear about how ‘Rose Clyffe’s’ original owner – noted diplomat, 19th century historian and rosarian George Bancroft – was involved.

  • Wednesday, October 11, 11:00 am – Ernest Bowditch: Out of Olmsted’s Shadow

    The Preservation Society of Newport County will host a lecture on Wednesday, October 11 at 11 am at Rosecliff, 548 Bellevue Avenue in Newport. Jim Donahue, Curator of Historic Landscapes & Horticulture for the Society, will speak on Ernest Bowditch: Out of Olmsted’s Shadow. Ernest W. Bowditch (1850-1918) was a key figure in the evolution of the profession of landscape architecture in the late 19th century. Over a 40-year career, Bowditch’s firm designed over 2,500 projects ranging from Gilded Age estate master plans to designs for planned garden suburbs and civil engineering projects. The Breakers landscape plan helped to launch Bowditch, and he returned to redesign the site over the course of his career. Come and learn about Bowditch, his relationship to the Vanderbilts, and the private paradise they created at The Breakers.

  • Wednesday, March 16 – Sunday, March 20 – The Boston Flower & Garden Show

    Leave behind the gray days of winter and rejoice in the 2011 show, entitled A Burst of Color: Celebrating the Container Garden. Boston’s biggest horticultural happening provides the tools and inspiration to kick off the season in style.  Hours are 9 am – 8 pm Wednesday, March 16 through Saturday, March 19 and 9 am – 6 pm on Sunday, March 20.   A complete schedule of lectures and demonstrations will be posted at www.thebostonflowershow.com, but some highlights include a talk by Tovah Martin on The New Terrarium, a lecture by Ellen Ecker Ogden  on The Complete Kitchen Garden, and a charmingly entitled “Growing Your Groceries in Containers” by Teresa O’Connor and Jayme Jenkins.   The show plays host to amateur competitions as well, coordinated by The Massachusetts Horticultural Society along with The Garden Club Federation of Massachusetts.
