     Joan Butler has been an enthusiastic gardener and plant collector for over 35 years, and believes gardens should invite you to linger in the world outside your door. The gardens on her half-acre suburban property have been included on several garden tours and feature exciting plant combinations, dramatic horticultural specimens, and extensive collections of native plants, hosta and epimedium. Joan has a deep and fundamental interest in the natural world. She holds a BA in Geology from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst and a Certificate in Landscape Management from UMass Extension Green School. She is a Master Gardener, a horticulturist at Weston Nurseries, and is a past Chairman of the Massachusetts Landscape Design Council. She is a member of the Garden Consultants Council, the New England Hosta Society and is an accredited Flower Show Judge. Joan has presented programs at flower shows in Massachusetts and Connecticut, and at numerous garden clubs, horticultural societies and professional organizations.

    Garden lecturer and author Joan Butler of Enchanted Gardens reveals that our gardens can be magical places –even in winter. Stripped of summer foliage and flowers, the success of a winter garden lies in its structure, basic design, and choice of plant materials. Inspiration and tips on designing gardens for winter interest include choosing the best trees, shrubs, and perennials, and grouping them to provide interesting vignettes.

    This Andover Garden Club meeting takes place at South Church Fellowship Hall, 41 Central Street, Andover, on Thursday, January 7. Meetings begin at 10:00 AM with social time and refreshments, followed by business meeting and program, and usually conclude around noon. Unless otherwise noted, meetings are free for Andover Garden Club members; a $10 donation is requested for guests, who are encouraged to attend.     The Natick Garden Club welcomes Joan Butler and Jana Milbocker on Thursday, April 18, beginning at 7 at the Natick Community Senior Center, 117 East Central Street in Natick, in the Great Room on the first floor. Joan Butler and Jana Milbocker of Enchanted Gardens Landscape Design in Holliston are garden designers, writer and lecturers. They will introduce us to the joys of Spring Ephemerals, those wonderful wildflowers that bloom in early spring, then disappear for the rest of the year.     The Garden Club Federation of Massachusetts presents its 9th Annual Civic Development Workshop on Wednesday, March 31, from 9 am – 12:30 pm at The Espousal Center, 554 Lexington Street, Waltham, Massachusetts.  Adriana O’Sullivan will speak on Tough Plants for Tough Places: Beautifying Your Community.  Ms. O’Sullivan is a graduate of The Landscape Institute at Harvard University, and former Chairperson of the Gardening Study School, Gardening Consultants Council, and the Landscape Design Council of Massachusetts.  She is the current Director of the South Shore District of GCFMA.  A group design exercise will follow the presentation.  Please bring colored pencils or markets.  Refreshments will be served.  Space is limited, so register early.  Send your check for $11, payable to GCFMA Inc., to Joan Butler, Chairman, Civic Development GCFMA, 76 Bayberry Lane, Holliston, MA 01746.  Include your telephone number, email address, and Garden Club affiliation along with your name and address.
