    This New England Wild Flower Society multisession course on Tuesdays, February 5 – March 19 from 6:30 – 8:30 at Garden in the Woods in Framingham, tackles the different aspects of the landscape design process. Workshop sessions focus on design methods using site analysis techniques and schematic design tools. Participants consult with the instructor and work on projects of their own choosing. Discussions about plants and habitats are interspersed with lectures on design principles, including criteria for making plant choices and determining placement in the landscape.   • Tuesdays, September 27, October 4, 18 & 25, and Saturdays, October 15 & 22 – Framework Trees of New England

    Forests are a dominant feature of the New England landscape. Join Karen Sebastian and the New England Wild Flower Society as we explore the history, changes in composition, and ecology of the New England forest from the Ice Age through European settlement. Learn to identify native New England trees, their habitats, and their communities. Explore the impact of natural and human disturbances on the forested landscape and learn to recognize stands of different ages. The course, which will generally meet at Garden in the Woods in Framingham, includes two weekend field trips to the Harvard Forest in Petersham and to the Arnold Arboretum.     In this multi-session New England Wild Flower Society and Cambridge Center for Adult Education course appropriate for beginners, learn different aspects of the landscape design process, with special emphasis on the use of native plants in the residential landscape. Workshop sessions focus on design methods involving site analysis techniques and schematic design tools. Consulting with the instructor, work on a project of your own choosing. Interspersed with design work are lectures on plants and habitats, including information on plant choice and placement in the landscape. A list of required materials will be discussed at the first class. Classes begin on February 4, from 5:45 – 7:45, and are taught by Karen Sebastian, principal, Karen Sebastian LLC Landscape Architecture. Classes will take place at the Cambridge Center for Adult Education on Brattle Street in Cambridge, and the fee is $209 for members of the sponsoring organization(s), or $245 for nonmembers.   • Tuesday, October 6, 7:00 – 9:00 pm – Framework Trees of New England

    Trees are the dominant plant type of New England, with forests covering most of the land area.  Instructor Karen Sebastian addresses identification and natural history of individual species as well as forest ecology. Since understanding today’s forests requires familiarity with their history, she will review the changing landscape from the Ice Age through European settlement. Students learn to identify native New England trees and their habitats, to recognize different aged stands (pioneer, second growth, and other growth) and become familiar with forest communities of the northeastern temperate region.

    You will consider the natural conditions and human disturbance factors that produce the different forest associations. Weekend field trips take you to a variety of forest types off-site. Bring a bag lunch and water.

  • Wednesday, October 7, 10 a.m. – 12 noon – Secret Garden in Sudbury

    Through a white picket fence, discover an enchanting series of spaces, each with a different theme and focus, on this garden tour sponsored by The New England Wild Flower Society on Wednesday, October 7, from 10 – noon.  Landscape architect Karen Sebastian describes the collaborative design process working with clients and contractors and then leads a tour through this recently completed project. The woodland-themed entry garden thrives under mature trees with shade tolerant shrubs and perennials.  The Secret Garden is a quiet shady retreat with a focus on foliage and texture, planted with a mix of native and non-natives, including ferns, viburnums, hydrangeas and boxwoods. The terrace garden is a hub of family activity with an out door kitchen and dining area. The wide joints between the irregular bluestone paving stones are planted with a variety of thymes, sagina, and sedums.  Stone seating walls surround a raised central bed planted with a Cornus kousa and the raised stone vegetable garden with a pergola.  The Children’s Play Area is a “woodland adventure trail” with a stepping stone path, swings, a slide, and even a tree house.  Fee is $20 for NEWFS members, $24 for non-members, and is limited to 20 participants.  For more information, log on to www.newfs.org, or call 508-877-7630.
