  • Wednesday, January 24, 7:00 pm – 8:00 pm – Invasive Plants: What Are They? And What Can Be Done? Webinar

    What are invasive plant species and what harm do they do to an ecosystem? Invasive plant species are a threat to natural areas throughout the country. No habitat or region is immune from the threat of invasive species. They displace native plants, eliminate native food and cover for wildlife, and threaten rare plant and animal species.

    Nearly all landscapes, both private gardens and public spaces, have become the unwelcome home to many invasives. Ecological Landscape Alliance will sponsor a webinar on Wednesday, January 24 from 7 – 8 pm. Lecturer Bruce Wenning is an invasive plant specialist who will help to shed light on the invasive plant challenges that face most property owners. If you are a homeowner who wants to understand more about invasives, join Bruce for this webinar to learn:

    * How to identify different types of invasive plants
    * How to safely remove them your own landscape
    * How different invasive plants spread
    * What removal methods are effective on each
    * The importance of proper disposal of invasive plants once removed

    Bruce Wenning is a horticulturist at The Country Club, Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts, where he is responsible for garden management and design, invasive species management, natural history of the grounds; and frequently lectures on horticultural subjects. Bruce’s background includes formal garden design and installation as well as public space management. Bruce has nearly 20 years of experience working with exotic invasive plant species common to Massachusetts for both private and public clients. Bruce’s career has also included several years at Massachusetts Audubon and at Land’s Sake. In addition to his general horticulture expertise, Bruce specializes in plant pest diagnostics; insect taxonomy; invasive species management; ecological landscaping consultation and design; as well as natural history. Bruce is on the Board of Directors for the Ecological Landscape Alliance (ELA) where he has served since 2003 and is a regular contributor to the ELA Newsletter and a local publication, the Newton TAB.   • Thursday, March 7, 7:00 pm – Farm to Lectern Speakers Series: Brian Donahue

    In association with the exhibition, The Greatest Source of Wealth: Agriculture in Concord, the Farm to Lectern Speakers Series brings nationally-recognized agrarian activists to Concord.  On Thursday, March 7, 2013, the Concord Museum welcomes Brian Donahue, an environmental historian, farmer, and collaborator on the New England Good Food Vision 2060. Donahue is Associate Professor of American Environmental Studies at Brandeis University and author of The Great Meadow: Farmers and the Land in Colonial Concord and Reclaiming the Commons: Community Farms and Forests in a New England Town. He co-founded and for 12 years directed Land’s Sake, a nonprofit community farm in Weston, Massachusetts.  In his talk, Nourishing New England: A Vision for Local and Regional Farming and Healthy Food, Donahue shares a bold vision that calls for our region to build the capacity to produce up to 80% of clean, fair, just and accessible food for all New Englanders by 2060.

  • Saturday, June 19, 10:00 am – Strawberry Festival

    Land’s Sake Farm, 90 Wellesley Street, Weston, MA is the place to be on Saturday, June 19, beginning at 10 am, for its Annual Strawberry Festival.  Please come for pick-your-own berries, summertime food including strawberry shortcake, live music, tractor rides, and many farm games and activities for children.  Land’s Sake strawberries are grown without the use of pesticides or synthetic fertilizers.  Admission is $4 for adults, $2 for children, and children under 2 and Land’s Sake members are free.  Call 781-893-1162 for more information.

    Land’s Sake, Inc. is a not for profit organization with a mission to connect people with the land. On Wednesday, April 28, beginning at 7 pm in the Conference Room of the Weston Public Library, come hear how exotic invasive plants are the silent and secret invaders of our neighborhoods, communities and Nation. Come learn about the eight ecological traits of invasive plant behavior that make these plants pests of our native landscapes. You will review organic and chemical control techniques for the top 16 exotic invasive plants plaguing eastern Massachusetts. Free, but please rsvp at 781-893-1163.

  • Thursday, April 22, 7:00 pm – Ecological Lawn Care

    Land’s Sake, Inc. will host a free public lecture on Thursday, April 22, beginning at 7 pm at the Weston Public Library Conference Room. Come learn about the proper lawn care techniques necessary for having a beautiful and environmentally sound lawn without relying on the use of toxic pesticides and fertilizers that contribute to ground and surface water contamination. The speakers will also cover the importance of soil testing for proper turf grass growth and soil improvement practices. Discussions will be raised on other topics including seeding vs. sodding; the best time for lawn renovation and non-toxic white grub control using lawn nematodes; how beneficial insects and microbes contribute to sustainable soil fertility better than non-organic fertilizer applications and answers to the top five lawn problems most encountered by the home owner and how to correct them.     Land’s Sake, Inc. of Weston sponsors its Sugaring Off Festival on Saturday, March 27 beginning at 10:00 am.  The Bill McElwain Sugar House at the Weston Middle School is the venue for the Festival, featuring a pancake breakfast, coffee, hot cider, maple sugar treats, bake sale, live music, tours of the Sugar House in full operation, and of course their own maple syrup.  Log on to www.landssake.org, or call 781-893-1162 for more information.
