  • Wednesday, April 4, 7:00 pm – 8:30 pm – Revealing a Sense of Place

    Seasonal New England is rich in its unique and dynamic ecological patterns. Join Grow Native Massachusetts on Wednesday, April 4 at 7 pm at the Cambridge Public Library, 449 Broadway, as Matthew Cunningham explores how his observations of these natural systems have influenced his firm’s creation of contextual and native plant-centric projects that grasp the rhythms of everyday life. He will show us a variety of residential landscapes, large and small, that embrace our regional flora, utilize ecologically sustainable principles, and that build connections between interior and exterior spaces to strengthen our relationship with nature. Come be inspired by these beautiful, vibrant landscapes that enhance life for both their human and their wild residents.

    Matthew Cunningham is a rising star in the world of landscape architecture. He is passionate about the landscapes of New England and is committed to excellent design with ecologically sustainable principles. A graduate of the Harvard Graduate School of Design, he worked at the renowned firm Reed Hilderbrand Associates before starting his own practice.   • Thursdays, March 22 – May 24, 6:30 pm – 8:30 pm – Spring 2018 Home Horticulture Series

    Registration is now open for ten information-packed evenings classes designed to help home gardeners be more effective at their favorite pastime. The Massachusetts Master Gardener Association is sponsoring Thursday evening classes, March 22 – May 24 from 6:30 – 8:30. The Home Hort Series covers all of the topics studied by certified Master Gardeners, but in a streamlined format suited to busy lifestyles: the program does not require outside reading, homework, volunteering, or testing. Topics include:

  • Saturday, March 10, 10:00 am – 11:00 am – Native Plants for Landscape Design

    Native plants offer as much design value as the traditional exotic plants used in most American landscapes – and they provide considerably more in terms of ecosystem value. This Ecological Landscape Alliance class at Garden in the Woods on Saturday, March 10 from 10 – 11 will identify native plants formerly unused in the designed landscape and discuss the characteristics they offer in specific site conditions.

    Instructor: Amy Nyman is a Landscape Designer and owner of Ruby Leaf Design providing landscape planning and ecological solutions including site analysis, landscape restoration, water management, native plant use, hardscaping, master plans, planting plans, and edible landscaping. Amy’s believes that design is a balance of function, beauty, and health.   • Sundays, March 4 & 11, 12:30 pm – 3:15 pm – Brass Tacks of Landscape Design

    Monique Allen of The Garden Continuum will conduct a two session class at Tower Hill Botanic Garden on March 4 and 11 from 12:30 – 3:15 on landscape design.

    Session one outlines the fundamentals of landscape design theory starting with an overview of garden ecology and a review of the layers: Infrastructure ~ Structure ~ Enhancements. This discussion will go over the permanent year round features of all landscapes (the bones) and review all of the convertible elements that transition through the seasons (the flesh). This discussion will also review the development of the design concept starting with the Needs ~ Wants ~ Wishes exercise (homework for next session).

    Session two will review the hands on elements of a site analysis from data gathering to documentation and interpretation in order to help guide the designer in making sound design choices. We will discuss plant inventory as well as surrounding vegetation (including weeds) to help with analysis. In this discussion we will review the Needs ~ Wants ~ Wishes exercise and review concept planning using bubble diagrams and discuss preliminary layout planning.

    Monique Allen has dedicated 32 years to the landscape industry focusing on land design development, best-practices construction, and fine gardening. She is the founder and creative director at The Garden Continuum, Inc., an award winning, 7-figure landscape firm. She’s developed a unique skill set in low impact and sustainable design practices. Monique is a certified Conservation Commissioner for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and a registered Women Owned Business. Monique is also the founder of TGC Academy, which runs the Landscaper’s Freedom Formula on-line training and offers private coaching to landscape business owners to help them navigate the complexities of growing a successful organization.

    Small gardens present the designer with the challenge of how to realize big ideas in tight quarters. Yet small sites don’t have to restrict garden interest and diversity.     This New England Wild Flower Society multisession course, appropriate for beginners, tackles the different aspects of the landscape design process. Workshop sessions will focus on design methods using site analysis techniques and schematic design tools. You will consult with the instructor and work on a project of your own choosing. Discussions about plants and habitats will be interspersed with lectures on design principles, including criteria for making plant choices and determining placement in the landscape. The class will take place at Garden in the Woods in Framingham beginning Tuesday, February 6 from 6 – 8 and continue each Tuesday evening through March 20.     Instructor Warren Leach, Landscape Horticulturist, will focus on fundamental principles of design used in creating landscapes and garden spaces and composing planting designs using a complement of woody and herbaceous plants.
