  • Sunday, May 27, 10:00 am – 11:00 am – Plant Propagation at the Arboretum: Campaign Collections to Planting in the Landscape

    Tour the Arnold Arboretum’s Dana Greenhouses with Plant Propagator Sean Halloran on Sunday, May 27 from 10 – 11. The focus will be on the Campaign for the Living Collections, seed (and plant) collecting in the field, accessioning and record keeping, seed stratification, and germination. Also learn about growing plants on in the Shade House and Nurseries and re-propagation of important lineages. The tour will end with time for questions and then back at the display pavilion to view our dwarfed potted plant collection. Meet at the Larz Anderson Bonsai and Penjing Pavilion.   • Sunday, October 20, 2:00 pm – 3:30 pm – Bonsai Matching

    The Arnold Arboretum of Harvard University presents Bonsai Matching with Arboretum Docent Robbie Apfel on Sunday, October 20 from 2 – 3:30 pm at the Hunnewell Building of the Arboretum. Most of the species seen as bonsai in the Arboretum’s Larz Anderson Bonsai Collection can also be found in the landscape. Explore the history and culture of bonsai and the Arboretum’s relationship with these plants, and compare bonsai with their “unrestricted” counterparts in the landscape.  This activity is free.   • Saturday, October 19, 2:00 pm – 3:00 pm – Bonsai at The Arnold Arboretum

    The Arnold Arboretum of Harvard University presents Bonsai at The Arnold Arboretum with Rhoda Kubrick, Arboretum Docent, on Saturday, October 19, from 2 – 3 pm. The Larz Anderson Bonsai Collection turns one hundred this year. Discover the art of bonsai and the history of the Arnold Arboretum’s bonsai collection, which includes a core of seven, large compact hinoki cypresses (Chamaecyparis obtusa ‘Chabo-hiba’)–each between 150 and 275 years old–as well as younger plants. Get a close-up look at these remarkable trees and gain a better understanding of bonsai maintenance. This activity is free.
