  • Wednesday, April 4, 6:30 pm – 8:30 pm – Living Walls: Verticulture ™ Life Off the Wall

    Though the idea of living walls and green facades is not new, the modern day applications and the infinite design and business possibilities are.  Explore the benefits of living wall technology, the opportunities it presents, and learn how to incorporate the artfulness of living walls into your landscape or home.   Learn about the environmental value of living walls and see how they can serve as an innovative way to overcome landscape challenges in confined spaces with dynamic results, and learn to take Urban Farming to new heights.  This Ecological Landscaping Association seminar is co-sponsored by the New England Wild Flower Society, and will take place Wednesday, A;pril 4, from 6:30 – 8:30 at Garden in the Woods in Framingham.  Your instructor Trevor Smith is a landscape designer and LEED Green Associate with Land Escapes.  Fee is $24 for ELA and NEWFS members, $29 for nonmembers.  Register on line at www.newfs.org.

  • Friday, January 21 – LEED Green Associate Exam Prep

    Taught by green building experts, this one-day LEED Green Associate Exam Prep prepares individuals to gain the confidence and knowledge needed to pass the LEED Green Associate exam.  The program, sponsored by the Green Roundtable, will be held at Nexus Boston, 38 Chauncy Street, on Friday, January 21 – please contact events@greenroundtable.org, or call 617-374-3740 for hours.

    Specifically, this course will:

    * Provide a core understanding about the LEED Rating Systems and the Certification process.
    * Increase your knowledge of LEED Rating Systems, Certification process, credit categories structure and specific credits.

    * Target the most valuable material to memorize for the LEED Green Associate exam through the lens of actual LEED Certified buildings.

    All participants get access to 700 LEED Green Associate practice questions, exam simulator, and a LEED Green Associate Study Guide.  Register at the discounted rate of $295 for the full day.

    Completion of this class meets the GBCI application requirements to take the LEED Green Associate exam. 9.0 AIA/CES Sustainable Design LU are offered for attending this training. All participants receive a certificate of completion that they can use to fulfill continuing education (CE) requirements of other professional certifications and to apply for the LEED Green Associate exam. Please note that drinks and breaks are provided, but meals are not included.

  • Tuesday, October 12, 1:00 – 6:15 pm, and Wednesday, October 13, 8:30 am – 4:30 pm – Garden Club Federation of Massachusetts Tri-Refresher

    Come to Ashfield, Massachusetts Tuesday, October 12 and Wednesday, October 13 for a two day intensive course in the foothills of the Berkshires.  This course of study will explore Beaver Lodge, a residence designed by Marie Stella, who spoke to The Garden Club of the Back Bay in March, 2010.  This handsome laboratory setting will offer information on the promotion of sustainability, innovative use of native plant materials, construction of rain gardens, green roofs, and vegetated walls.  Rainwater harvesting and organic vegetable gardening will also be featured.  A “petting zoo” of green materials will help familiarize you with the latest products available.  Enjoy locavore gourmet meals and learn about Slow Food.  Beaver Lodge is Platinum LEED certified, the highest level of achievement designated by the US Green Building Council in Washington, DC, and the only such home in western Massachusetts.  Cost per person for the two day Tri-Refresher Workshop (Landscape Design, Gardening Studies School, and Environmental Studies) is $200 for eight hours of instruction.  Room and Board: Per night including breakfast (12 persons can be accommodated dormitory style at Beaver Lodge), $75.  Tuesday dinner and Wednesday lunch – organic local produce and products: $75.  Note: One group can stay overnight Tuesday and the other on Wednesday.  Total immersion is an integral part of the Beaver Lodge experience.  A list of items to bring will be mailed to participants, as well as directions.  To register, or for a copy of the complete schedule, contact Marie Stella, 719 Barnes Road, Shelburne Falls, MA by emailing marie@mariestellabeaverlodge.com.  You may also check her website at www.mariestellabeaverlodge.com.

  • Sunday, October 25, 1 – 2 pm – The Native Plant Center: It’s Easy Being Green

    Learn about the energy saving and other ‘green’ technologies used in the design and construction of the New England Wild Flower Society’s new Native Plant Center at Garden in the Woods in Framingham on Sunday, October 25, beginning at 1 pm.  This walking tour of the new facility with Ron Wik addresses all ‘green’ attributes of the building, such as roof and wall insulation, use of local materials, radiant heating and other energy saving technologies. Find out how the Society is working towards LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification at the gold level for our newest, greenest structure. LEED Certification involves meeting a demanding suite of standards for environmentally sustainable construction, and Garden Club of the Back Bay members will hear more about this at our March meeting with Marie Stella.  The program is free, but registration is required.  Call 508-877-7630, or log on to www.newfs.org.
