Hundreds of orchid plants are for sale, including many hard-to-find varieties. Visit the greenhouses and enjoy gorgeous floral colors, shapes, and scents. Among the many varieties on display and for sale are cattleyas, laelias, oncidiums, Paphiopedilum, and Phalaenopsis. Their long-lasting and showy blooms make orchids a dramatic addition to any indoor environment and this adaptable species can be grown in a variety of home conditions. Free admission.   • Friday, July 29 – Sunday, July 31, 9:30 am – 4:00 pm – Greenhouse Clearance Sale at Lyman Estate Greenhouses

    It’s a great time to plant and get some deals on plants on Friday, July 29 – Sunday, July 31, from 9:30 – 4.  All the hosta, perennial, herb and annual plants at the greenhouses at Historic New England’s Lyman Estate are heavily discounted for this weekend sale.  The expert staff will help you choose plants for your garden conditions.  For those of you who await the Fall Clearance Sale, please not that this is the Fall Clearance Sale, moved up to July.  The Lyman Estate Greenhouses are located at 185 Lyman Street in Waltham, and there is free admission.  For more information, call 781-891-1985.

  • Thursday, June 9, 10:00 am – 12:00 noon – Kitchen Scraps to Compost: Composting 101

    Turn unwanted kitchen scraps into a rich fertilizer for your plants when the staff at the Lyman Estate Greenhouses, 185 Lyman Street in Waltham,  teaches you how to set up a home composting bin. Topics covered include choosing the right bin, feeding and maintaining your worms, and harvesting your black gold fertilizer.   • Thursday, April 7, 2:00 pm – 5:00 pm, and Friday, April 8 – Sunday, April 10, 10:00 am – 4:00 pm – Spring Orchid Sale

    Hundreds of orchid plants are for sale at the Lyman Estate Greenhouses, 185 Lyman Street in Waltham, beginning Thursday, April 7, from 2 – 5 for Historic New England members, including cattleyas, laelias, paphiopedilums, and phalaenopsis. Both species and hybrid plants that are budded and blooming are available.  Historic New England members receive early access before the sale opens to the public on April 8. No RSVP is necessary. Historic New England’s Garden and Landscape members receive a 15% discount on all greenhouse purchases.   • Monday, February 7 – Sunday, March 6, 10:00 am – 4:00 pm – Camellia Blooming Season

    Visit the celebrated collection of camellias in the 1804 camellia house at the Lyman Estate Greenhouses, 185 Lyman Street, Waltham, from 10 am – 4 pm Monday, February 7 through Sunday, March 6. Many of the trees are over one hundred years old and this is the time of year they put forth a profusion of blossoms in all sizes and shapes. Other plants available during this season include orchids, citrus, and sweet olives. Free admission.   • Saturday, October 23, 10 a.m. – 3:00 pm – Orchid Growing Clinic

    Once again Historic New England will feature orchids at the Lyman Estate Greenhouses in Waltham, Massachusetts on Saturday, October 23 at 10 a.m.  Bring up to three orchid plants for evaluation by experienced horticulturists. Get advice on maintaining healthy blooming plants. Other services offered include repotting and educational handouts about orchids. Books, pots, and growing supplies are for sale.     To celebrate the recent publication of Shaping the American Landscape: New Profiles from the Pioneers of American Landscape Design Project, a series of regional symposia will be held. Each venue in this national series will spotlight specific designers, projects, and trends that collectively celebrate our unique and historically significant designed landscape heritage.   • Friday, November 6, 10 a.m. – Beginning Orchid Growing Clinic

    Historic New England is sponsoring a Beginning Orchid Growing Clinic at the Lyman Estate Greenhouses in Waltham, Massachusetts on Friday, November 6, beginning at 10 a.m.  Learn the essentials of growing orchids, including requirements of growing media, light, water, temperature, and fertilization. With their long-lasting and showy blooms, orchids are one of the most beautiful and dramatic of all flowering plants.     Few things are more rewarding than plucking a lemon off your plant in the middle of the winter or savoring your own fresh figs in the middle of summer. Learn to grow numerous types of citrus including; lemons, limes, and oranges, along with delicious figs, on your windowsill or in your garden. We will cover propagation, light, feeding, and general culture.
