    The New York Botanical Garden has been a connective hub among people, plants, and the planet since 1891. Since inception, millions of visitors have made the Garden a part of their lives, exploring the joy, beauty, and respite of nature here in the heart of the Bronx. One of the Garden’s remarkable leaders, Todd Forrest, Arthur Ross Vice President for Horticulture and Living Collections, has dedicated himself to the development and reimagination of many well-loved areas within these 250-acres for over 20 years, including the Benenson Ornamental Conifers, the Native Plant Garden, the Azalea Garden, and the Thain Family Forest, as well as the annual Orchid Show and many interdisciplinary exhibitions.

    On October 14, at 6:30 pm, hear from Forrest as he reveals the role landscape architecture plays in enticing visitors to return every season. He will share how his collaborations with distinguished landscape architects and designers—such as Laurie Olin, Signe Nielsen, Lynden Miller, Madison Cox, Susan Cohen, Piet Oudolf, Sarah Price, Shavaun Towers, just to name a few—have brought varied artistic visions to NYBG.   • Saturday, May 12, 10:30 am – Digging Deeper: Spring Beauties

    The country garden of Lynden Miller, an acclaimed public garden designer and a serious plant lover, has been her laboratory for design ideas and plant combinations since 1980. She adores early spring in her garden, particularly her woodland, and will welcome a small group to really look at what makes that work. Her site features a large mixed border backed by a curved yew hedge, a raised garden, and a cottage garden. There is a small pond and a recirculating stream, a woodland with moss paths, and many hardy hydrangeas.

    In 1982, Lynden Miller rescued and restored The Conservatory Garden in Central Park. Based on her belief that good public open spaces can change city life, she has since designed more than forty other gardens and parks, including Bryant Park, The New York Botanical Garden, and Wagner Park in Battery Park City. Lynden wrote Parks, Plants and People: Beautifying the Urban Landscape, which won the American Horticultural Society 2010 National Book Award.

  • Thursday, July 27, 10:30 am – 12:00 noon – The Garden of Lynden Miller

    The Berkshire Botanical Garden will sponsor a tour of garden designer Lynden Miller’s Berkshire garden on Thursday, July 27, from 10:30 – noon. This Connecticut garden is an expression of Lynden’s artistic background and her passion for plants.

    Lynden has created a large semi-circular evergreen hedge enclosing mixed borders, a woodland garden, a raised gravel garden, a large cottage garden and a small stream and pond to celebrate many different plants and combinations.   • Thursday, September 8, 7:00 pm – Massachusetts Horticultural Society 2011 Honorary Medals Dinner

    On September 8, Mass Hort will continue its almost century-long tradition of honoring superior achievements in horticulture when Elm Bank hosts the 2011 Honorary Medals Gala with Lynden B. Miller receiving the George Robert White Medal of Honor for her work as a designer of urban parks.

    Lynden B. Miller is a public garden designer in New York City and director of The Conservatory Garden in Central Park, which she rescued and restored beginning in 1982. Her work includes gardens for The Central Park Zoo, Bryant Park, The New York Botanical Garden, Madison Square Park, and Wagner Park in Battery Park City as well as many smaller projects in all five boroughs and beyond, including waterfront gardens in Red Hook, Brooklyn, improvements to Union Square Park and the 97th Street Park Avenue Mall, renovation of the “Gateway to Harlem” Broadway Mall at 135th Street, Loeb Plaza for Hunter College, and the 67th Street Armory.

    Other winners include Wesley R. Autio, professor of pomology at UMass Amherst, Richard Jaynes of Broken Hill Nursery, volunteer Joyce Bakshi, Theodore Landsmark of Boston Architectural College, Organic Gardening Magazine, author Ellen Ecker Ogden, Carrie Waterman, Russ Billings of Mount Holyoke College, and the Lyman Plant House of the Botanic Gardens at Smith College.

  • Friday, March 5, 7:30 pm – Parks, Plants and People

    The Spring Bulb Show at Smith College (March 6 – March 21, 10 – 4 daily) kicks off on Friday, March 5 at 7:30 pm in the Campus Center Carroll Room with a lecture by Lynden Miller entitled Parks, Plants and People, followed by a reception and booksigning at the Lyman Conservatory, with the Bulb Show illuminated.  Lynden Miller is an outstanding Public Garden Designer of international renown. She is Director of the Conservatory Garden in Central Park, which she rescued and rejuvenated in 1982.  Trained as a painter, Miller brings the artist’s sensibility to her work.  She received a Master’s in Studio Art at the University of Maryland and a BA in the History of Art at Smith College, and studied Horticulture at the New York Botanical Garden.  For 25 years, Lynden Miller has focused on the improvement of parks and gardens throughout New York City.  Believing that beautiful and well maintained public open green space can change city life, she has taken a new approach to public horticulture, creating rich plantings that provide interest year-round.  After 9/11, she secured a gift of a million daffodils, to serve as a living memorial to those who died.  In the spring of 2002 they bloomed to raise the spirits of New Yorkers and beautify parks everywhere.  The Daffodil Project continues with over 3 million daffodils planted.

    Visit the Smith College Lyman Conservatory beginning Saturday, March 6 through Sunday, March 21 from 10 am – 4 pm daily to view a gorgeous display of Spring Bulbs, guaranteed to raise your spirits after a cold, dark winter.  There also will be special evening hours on Friday, March 12 and Friday, March 19 from 6 – 8 pm, and as detailed below, an Opening Lecture entitled Parks, Places and Plants by Lynden Miller on Monday, March 5, beginning at 7:30 pm in the Campus Center Carroll Room.  A $2 donation is requested.  If you are a member of the Smith College Botanical Garden, there will be members only hours each day from 9 – 10 am – please bring your membership card.  Then, on Saturday and Sunday, March 27 and 28, bring your wallet for the After the Show Bulb Sale.  Members hours Saturday, March 27 9:00 am – noon, general public noon – 3 pm Saturday, and 9 am – 3 pm Sunday.  For directions, log on to www.smith.edu.

  • Wednesday, October 7, 6 – 8 pm – Lynden Miller in Boston

    Lynden Miller, well known NYC public garden designer, will speak about designing, maintaining, and funding beautiful, four-season plantings for public places on Wednesday, October 7, from 6 – 8 pm. Her garden projects in NYC have become urban oases with economic benefits and the power to transform the way people behave and feel about their city.

    Lynden Miller’s life-long work is creating beautiful gardens in challenging locations. She has been featured on the Martha Stewart Show and in Fine Gardening, Horticulture, and House Beautiful magazines. Her message about the fundamental necessity of healthy green spaces is critical for today; her new book documents the ‘how to’ of her success.
