    Come to the 4H Fairgrounds, 51 South Chelmsford Road, Westford, September 24 and 25, for the Middlesex Conservation District Fall Bulb and Perennial Sale – tulips, daffodils, alliums (below), unusual bulbs, iris, perennials and garden supplies (compost bins, bulb fertilizer, kitchen scrap buckets, etc). All items may be ordered in advance through September 4 to ensure best selection. To place an order, visit the MCD website at www.middlesexconservation.org and download an order form, or call 978 692 9395 and obtain a brochure by mail. All proceeds will benefit the District�s’ conservation programs.  You may also email frances.gillespie@ma.usda.gov for brochures and directions.  Friday hours 3 – 6, Saturday 8 – noon.

  • Tuesday, April 13, 5:15 pm – Cold Comfort: The Biogeography of Northern British America

    The Massachusetts Historical Society annually sponsors the Boston Environmental History Seminar, an academic forum for scholars as well as interested members of the public, to discuss aspects of American environmental history.  On Tuesday, April 13, beginning at 5:15 pm, Anya Zilberstein of Concordia University in Montreal will speak on “Cold Comfort: The Biogeography of Northern British America.”  Brian Donahue of Brandeis University will also comment.  The Massachusetts Historical Society is located at  1154 Boylston Street in Boston.  For information on the 2009-2010 series, and to register, log on to www.masshist.org, or call 617-536-1608.  If you wish to receive a copy of the paper in advance, you may subscribe on-line for the modest fee of $15, or you may receive the paper by mail for $25.

    Join The Boston Harbor Association for its 2009 Annual Meeting. Reception begins at 5 p.m., followed by short business meeting and program at 6 p.m. Free, registration required at mail@tbha.org (note: priority to TBHA members, but the public is invited).  The event will take place at North Coast Seafoods, 5 Drydock Avenue in Boston (picture below).

  • Commonwealth Avenue Mall Lights

    Join your neighbors and friends in lighting the Mall again this year.  Funded entirely by donations, it is the neighborhood’s gift to the City.  Donations are currently being solicited, large or small.  Make checks payable to Committee to Light Commonwealth Avenue Mall, and mail them to the Back Bay Association, 234 Clarendon Street, Boston, MA 02116.  Donations may also be made online at www.BackBayLights.com.  The Committee to Light Commonwealth Avenue Mall works with the Commonwealth Avenue Mall Committee of The Friends of the Public Garden and with the Boston Parks and Recreation Department.

  • Tuesday, November 10, noon – 1 pm – Walk to the Sea

    Join the Boston Harbor Association’s Vivien Li for a tour of the “Norman B. Leventhal Walk to the Sea” on Tuesday, November 10, from noon to one pm.  The mile long walking tour encompasses four centuries of Boston history, extending from Beacon Hill to Long Wharf.  Meet in front of the State House on Beacon Street.  The tour is free, but reservations are recommended.  You may call 617-482-1722. or email mail@tbha.org.

  • Tuesday, November 17, 11:00 am – Isabella and Her Gardens

    The Boston Committee of the Garden Club of America invites you to its 20th Birthday Celebration Annual Meeting and Fall Lecture on Tuesday, November 17, with registration at 10:30 am, and lecture at 11 am.  Patrick Chassé, the first Curator of Landscape, The Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, will give an illustrated lecture entitled  “Isabella and Her Gardens.”

    Like a horticultural Sherlock Holmes, Patrick Chassé tracks down clues to gardens of the past. His latest challenge is to unlock the secrets of a magnificent courtyard garden long identified with a Boston museum and its charismatic founder.

    Mr. Chassé, a landscape architect, has served since 2004 as the curator of landscape at the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, the first person to hold such a title there. His detective work involves documenting the courtyard’s evolution and reinstating elements of its design as envisioned by Isabella Stewart Gardner in the early 1900s.

    The event will take place at The Country Club in Brookline, Massachusetts.  Cost of lecture is $20 (public invited), Lecture and Luncheon $45 (members of Boston Committee Clubs only, please.)  RSVP by November 12.  Please make check payable to The Boston Committee of the GCA and mail to Mrs. William U.   • Sunday, July 26, 11 – 4 – A Festival of Flowers

    The Trustees of the Southwest Harbor Public Library invite you to attend a Garden and House Tour “A Festival of Flowers on Mount Desert Island, Maine” Sunday, July 26, from 11 a.m. – 4 p.m., rain or shine.  For 20 years the library has been bringing the special pleasure of visiting local private gardens to the public, this year featuring six lovely gardens strung along the shore from Southwest Harbor to Manset, to Bass Harbor and up to West Tremont. .
