  • Wednesdays, July 13 – July 27, 10:00 am – 2:00 pm – Color Gardens: Learn to Create Three Season Flower Gardens with Winter Appeal

    In this three-session Massachusetts Horticultural Society tutorial course to be held Wednesdays, July 13, 20 and 27 from 10 – 2 in the Parkman Room of the Education Building at Elm Bank, 900 Washington Street in Wellesley, Maria von Brincken, landscape designer, will teach you how to use color and plants to design gardens filled with color from flowers and foliage. You’ll learn how to create beautiful plant combinations that flower from spring to frost for sun and shade. Through hands-on practice sessions, participants make a landscape/garden color palette, and then learn the system to design plant combinations in color sequences through the seasons. Finally, take tutorial walks in the Bressingham Garden illustrate class lectures and exercises.

    Maria von Brincken, principle of Maria von Brincken Landscape Garden Design, is an award-winning certified designer (APLD and LI) celebrating her 21st year in professional practice. Maria specializes in custom beautiful spaces and colorful flower gardens using native and ornamental plants.

    Trained as a fine artist, color theorist, and organic gardener Maria brings years of critical design thinking to her landscape solutions. Her design has been featured in Fine Gardening Magazine, Landscape Ideas You Can Use and others. A former contributing editor to Land Shapes Magazine, her writing has also been published in NELDHA’s Perspectives, APLD’s The Designer, and GardenDrum.org.

    Her lectures and workshops have been featured at the MHS, Boston  Flower Show, Radcliffe Seminars and the LI, Connecticut Master Gardener’s Conference, Perennial Plant Conference, ELA– just to name a few.   • Wednesdays, July 9 – July 30, 9:30 am – 12:30 pm – Perennial & Shrub Planting Design for Seasonal Color

    This Massachusetts Horticultural Society four session workshop with Maria Von Brincken of The Boston Architectural College examines planting design, color combinations and effective bed layout. In this workshop students will learn to combine the user’s experience and circulation systems, with massing and form to create stunning plant combinations.

    Students will practice design applications based on color theory, texture, and form to create seasonal planting combinations, winter form, and backdrops to highlight waves of color. Students will design a front and back garden focusing on impact through planting design and form, students may select their own sites.

    Learn personalized color palettes and planting layouts to create combinations for ongoing colorful displays. The role of planted containers will be discussed and included in design. The class format includes lecture, discussion of reading, design support and review of weekly design exercises.

    This workshop, taking place Wednesdays, July 9 – 30 from 9:30 – 12:30, is best suited for individuals who have working knowledge of some garden plants and a strong interest in horticulture.

  • Saturday, May 15, 2:00 pm – Vegetable Garden Preview at Tower Hill

    The Vegetable Garden at Tower Hill is one of the Garden highlights of the summer season.  For the past ten years, horticulturist Dawn Davies has been the force behind the plant selections and arrangements for this charming garden, and she has taken the displays to new and inspiring heights.  Join Dawn on Saturday, May 15 at 2 pm for a sneak preview of the Vegetable Garden Healthy Harvest theme for 2010.  Dawn shares tips and techniques for growing a bountiful, healthy and beautiful vegetable garden.  Photo below of the Vegetable Garden at Tower Hill  by Maria von Brincken, Landscape Designer.  The tour is free with admission to Tower Hill.  For more information, log on to www.towerhillbg.org.
