  • July & August – Massachusetts Summer Fairs

    Fair season in Massachusetts starts in mid-July and ramps up quickly through August. The western half of the state leads the way, with small agricultural fairs that feel more like Vermont than Boston.

    July: The Westport Fair (July 15–19) near the Rhode Island border is a classic agricultural fair with oxen pulls, horse shows, and a packed midway. On the same weekend, the Hampshire County 4-H Fair (July 18) in Cummington gives families a small, welcoming introduction to the fair circuit. The month wraps with the Barnstable County Fair (July 20–25) on Cape Cod — one of the few fairs in the state where you can smell salt air from the midway — and the Hampden County 4-H Fair (July 25) on the Big E grounds.

    August is peak fair month in Massachusetts. The Bolton Fair (August 14–16) in central Massachusetts is a local favorite — a traditional agricultural fair with demolition derbies, baking competitions, and a strong 4-H presence. The nearby Middlefield Fair (August 14–16) and Martha’s Vineyard Fair (August 13–16) run the same weekend, giving you options from the Berkshires to the islands.

    Later in August, the Littleville Fair (August 7–9), Heath Fair (August 21–23), Westfield Fair (August 21–23), and Hardwick Fair (August 21–23) all compete for your weekend. The massive Marshfield Fair (August 21–30) runs for ten days on the South Shore and draws some of the biggest crowds in the state.

    The month closes with the Cummington Fair (August 27–30), the Shelburne Grange Fair (August 29), the 3 County Fair in Northampton (August 29), and the Middlesex County 4-H Fair (August 28–30).

    The South Shore District of the Garden Club Federation of Massachusetts, Inc. and the Marshfield Agricultural and Horticultural Society present Back to the Future, an NGC Standard Flower Show, August 15 – 19 at Marshfield Fair Horticulture Hall, 140 Main Street in Marshfield.   • South Shore District Flower Show Cancellation

  • Thursday, August 16 – Sunday, August 25 – The 152nd Marshfield Fair

    The Marshfield Agricultural and Horticultural Society, sponsors of the Marshfield Fair, is dedicated to making the 152nd Annual Marshfield Fair, this year to be held August 16 – 25, the premier event of Southeastern Massachusetts. Gates will be open noon – 10 pm each day. Hundreds of competitors will compete in 4-H, arts and crafts, agricultural, and horticultural events.     Come to the Marshfield Fair at 140 Main Street in Marshfield during its 2016 run from August 19 – 28.  Open daily noon – 10, admission is $10, and children 6 and under enter free.     The Marshfield Agricultural and Horticultural Society sponsors the Marshfield Fair on Friday, August 19 – Sunday, August 28, from noon – 10 each day.  $10 per person, children under 6 free.  No pets allowed except guide dogs.  The Fair takes place at 140 Main Street in Marshfield.

    The Fair includes a standard flower show, and in the past there have been Dahlia and Sunflower competitions, bonsai and rug hooking demonstrations, wine tastings, and many horticultural lectures by noted local experts.  The 2016 listing may be found at www.marshfieldfair.org.

  • Friday, August 17 – Sunday, August 26 – A Capital Idea at The Marshfield Fair – Call to Exhibitors

    A Capital Idea, The Design Division of a Standard Flower Show at the Marshfield Fair, will take place August 17 – 26.  Class 1, a Stretch design, is entitled “London Bridge”.  Class 2, a design, Traditional or Creative, inspired by an ancient Greek god or mythological creature selected by the Exhibitor, is entitled “The Acropolis.”  Class 3, a Reflective design,  is Paris, “City of Lights.”  Class 4, a Traditional or Creative style design, using predominantly white plant material, is “The White House.”  Class 5, a Functional Table for One, is Tokyo “Tea Ceremony.”  Finally, Class 6, a collage on a panel 20″ wide by 30” high, is Mexico City “Fiesta.”  Contact Ginger King, 781-383-9554, or kingbobg@aol.com, for more information on exhibiting.

    This year’s Marshfield Fair, August 19 – 28 taking place at 140 Main Street in Marshfield, offers great family entertainment with hundreds of farm animals, daily free shows, free grandstand attractions, arts & crafts, 4 H & Agricultural exhibits, horticultural displays & much more.  Free Grandstand entertainment includes: Demolition Derby’s, Motorcycle Motocross Madness, Empire Pro Wrestling, The North River Blues Festival, truck and tractor pulls, and Battle of the Bands.
