  • October 1 – October 31 – On Demand Webinar: Soil Tests – How to Interpret and Use Results for Better Tree Health

    Soil health can make or break the survivability of trees in your care. You have likely collected soil samples and sent them to a lab for testing. While you are able to interpret the results at a basic level, are you clear on what you can or should do with the detailed results? Join the Massachusetts Arborists Association during the month of October as we discuss the fundamentals of soil supplements, along with the proper way to collect a soil sample and interpret test results. We’ll examine the results of local soil tests and discuss appropriate action plans. Gain a better understanding of how to use soil testing to improve the wellbeing of trees. The speaker is Tom Akin, State Resource Conservationist with the USDA National Resources Conservation Services in Amherst, Massachusetts. You will receive a link to the webinar upon registration.     Mark your calendar now and watch for details about the Massachusetts Arborists Association’s Arbor Day of Service celebration on Friday, April 30, 2021.  MAA’s popular community service event will be held at the historic Ames Estate and Community Park in Easton, MA.     First settled by Oliver Ames, 35th Governor of the Commonwealth, this 36-acre bucolic estate is now a well-loved green space regularly enjoyed by community members under the stewardship of The Trustees. The property has a significant number of full-growth specimen trees that reflect the ongoing commitment of the Ames family members to arboriculture. Dramatic examples include Kentucky coffee tree, magnolia, cucumber magnolia, Stewartia, beeches, sweet gum and columnar maple.

    Rehabilitating poorly pruned plants back into pleasant landscape contributors is a science and an art. It takes both understanding clients and firm hands on the loppers and pruning saw. It also requires a little risk taking and an understanding of the principles of plant physiology and growth. Join Erik Draper, Assistant Professor, Ohio State University Extension, and the Massachusetts Arborists Association as they review limitations of corrective pruning practices, as well as basic principles of plant physiology that determine how plants grow. Join the Massachusetts Arborists Association as we compare tree growth using different soil treatment options near concrete pavement. You’ll learn methods to use in urban planting sites to ensure beneficial tree health and growth outcomes.     New England Grows is renowned for its world-class education offerings and innovative trend spotting. Founded in 1993 by green industry professionals for green industry professionals, the educational conference and exposition gives participants unique access to targeted, industry-specific products, information, education and connections. The New England Nursery Association, Massachusetts Arborists Association, Massachusetts Association of Landscape Professionals and Massachusetts Nursery & Landscape Association are the organization’s founding partners.

    Proceeds from New England Grows go directly back to the industry to support the work of these and other green industry organizations, including yearly research grants to the region’s Cooperative Extension programs. Funds from the show also support related community-based programs, such as the Boston Schoolyard Initiative. The show’s format and educational content is continually updated to meet current industry needs and bring inspirational thinking to participants. Since its start, New England Grows has tripled in size and earned a Tradeshow Week 200 and two Fastest 50 rankings. The show moved to the Boston Convention & Exhibition Center in 2005.
