    Instructor Warren Leach, Landscape Horticulturist, will focus on fundamental principles of design used in creating landscapes and garden spaces and composing planting designs using a complement of woody and herbaceous plants.

    Melissa Pace, garden educator, artist and photographer, will lead a Massachusetts Horticultural Society workshop on Wednesday, January 24 from 10 – 4 that will give you an understanding of the elements of photography; line, texture, shape, space and color to add “wow” to your garden photography.   • Saturday, January 20, 10:00 am – 2:00 pm – Greenhouse Growing and Maintenance

    David Fiske, Mass Hort Gardens Curator, will lead a Saturday, January 20 workshop from 10 – 2 in the Putnam Building at the Gardens at Elm Bank that will show you ways to best utilize your greenhouse and indoor growing spaces. He’ll discuss not only how to use these spaces to grow specific plants and starts, but also review maintenance needs that should be on your seasonal checklist.   • Thursday, January 18, 7:00 pm – 8:30 pm – Grow Your Own Succulent Container

    Come to The Gardens at Elm Bank (Parkman Room) on Thursday, January 18 from 7 – 8:30 for a fun evening and learn what you need to know to maintain a container planting of succulents. Carrie Waterman will bring a selection of plants to show the diversity of succulent plants. She will discuss the best species to keep in containers and how to care and propagate your own succulents. Afterward, Barb Rietscha of Stow Greenhouses will provide materials so every student can create a long-lasting, low-maintenance garden. Must pre-register at www.masshort.org.   • Wednesdays, January 17 and January 24, 10:00 am – 2:00 pm – Designing the Winter Landscape

    Maria von Brincken will help you design an outdoor space that uses texture, color, and mass planting to create visual interest throughout the winter. Winter gardens also create a backdrop for seasonal flower gardens. Featuring Massachusetts Horticultural Society’s Bressingham Garden, her design work, and others, Maria will introduce you to lay-out and plant lists that will inspire your garden planning during these cold months. Weather permitting, dress for a tutorial walk in our winter gardens. There will be class time for you to experiment with winter planting combinations and layout that could work in your own gardens. The Mass Hort event will take place on two Wednesdays, January 17 and 24, from 10 – 2.

    Maria von Brincken, principle of Maria von Brincken Landscape Garden Design, is an award-winning certified designer (APLD and LI) celebrating her 21st year in professional practice. Maria specializes in custom beautiful spaces and colorful flower gardens using native and ornamental plants.

    Trained as a fine artist, color theorist, and organic gardener Maria brings years of critical design thinking to her landscape solutions. Her design has been featured in Fine Gardening Magazine, Landscape Ideas You Can Use and others.

    Her lectures and workshops have been featured at Mass Hort, Boston The Flower Show, Radcliffe Seminars and the LI, Conn. Master Gardener’s Conference, Perennial Plant Conference, ELA- just to name a few. Her lectures, classes, and workshops teach successful ways of thinking and techniques.

  • Tuesdays, January 16 – February 13, 7:00 pm – 8:30 pm – Botany for the Home Gardener

    In this five-session Massachusetts Horticultural Society course, join Senior Horticulturist Hannah Traggis to explore the fundamentals of plant structures and their function, reproductive and floral biology, introductory concepts in physiology and metabolism, and overall systematic organization and classification of major plant groups within the plant kingdom. Participants will better understand the world of plants and gain a far deeper appreciation for their wonder. The class will take place Tuesdays, January 16 – February 13, from 7 – 8:30 in the Cheny Room of the Education Building at the Gardens at Elm Bank, 900 Washington Street in Wellesley. $150 Mass Hort members, $200 general admission.   • Tuesday, January 9, 1:30 pm – 3:00 pm – Tour of Harvard’s Glass Flower Collection

    Join the Massachusetts Horticultural Society for a special tour of one of the Harvard’s most famous treasures- the internationally acclaimed Ware Collection of Blaschka Glass Models of Plants, the “Glass Flowers.” This unique collection of over 4,000 models, representing more than 830 plant species, was created by glass artisans Leopold and Rudolf Blaschka, a father and son from Dresden, Germany. The collection is housed at Harvard University’s Museum of Natural History, 26 Oxford Street in Cambridge, and the event takes place Tuesday, January 9 from 1:30 – 3:00. $20 for Mass Hort members, $30 for nonmembers.   • Friday, November 24 – Sunday, December 10 – Festival of Trees & Snow Village

    Massachusetts Horticultural Society’s Festival of Trees showcases dozens of trees, and the Snow Village at Elm Bank is designed for children and adults to enjoy. This annual festival takes place from November 24 through December 10 at Mass Hort’s The Gardens at Elm Bank, 900 Washington Street, Wellesley, MA 02482.

    The Festival of Trees, displayed in the Hunnewell Building, offers beautifully decorated holiday trees that are donated and decorated by local businesses, garden clubs, and individuals. Visitors “vote” with their raffle tickets, in hopes of being the tree winner at the end of the festival. Visitors can also enjoy the decorated buildings and grounds at The Gardens at Elm Bank with a stroll or a horse-drawn wagon ride. For the young at heart, there are Santa Visits and other activities.

    Snow Village at Elm Bank is a wonderful addition to the holiday spirit of the Festival of Trees. Bill Meagher of Needham graciously donated the product of his thirteen year “hobby” of building Christmas villages and trains. It is a bit different each year as he continues to tweak the arrangement. Massachusetts Horticultural Society is delighted to share his enchanting displays with model trains winding through villages and vignettes, including Christmas in the City (Boston of course!), Fenway Park, and hundreds of decorated houses and lights.
