  • Thursday, February 14, 1:30 pm – 3:00 pm – Home Garden Remedies: The Good, The Bad, and What Were Your Thinking?

    It can be fun to think that the answer to all your garden problems is already in your kitchen and bathroom cupboards, but are household products or homemade brews really effective in the garden? C.L. Fornari looks at remedies passed over the backyard fences, through Facebook, and on Pinterest.  Learn what works, what’s a waste of time, and which “solutions” are actually garden disasters.  The lecture will take place at Elm Bank, 900 Washington Street, Wellesley, on Thursday, February 14 from 1:30 – 3, and is $15 for Mass Hort members, $22 for nonmembers.  Sign up on line at www.masshort.org.

  • Thursday, February 9, 7:00 pm – 8:00 pm – DIY: Dish Gardens

    Create your own beautiful succulent garden at Elm Bank, 900 Washington Street, on Thursday, February 9 from 7 – 8 p.  Students will be able to choose from a variety of succulents to make a long-lasting, low-maintenance garden. Barb Rietscha, owner of Stow Greenhouses, will provide all materials.  $40 for Mass Hort members, $60 for nonmembers, and pre-registration is required at www.masshort.org.

  • Tuesday, January 31, 1:30 pm – 3:00 pm – Tour of Wellesley College’s Margaret C. Ferguson Greenhouses

    Gail Kahn, Assistant Director of the Wellesley College Botanic Gardens, will lead a tour through their 16 interconnected greenhouses, which house the most diverse collection of plants under glass in the greater Boston area.  Highlights of the season may include birds of paradise, orchids, and a blooming Durant camellia, a 130 year old specimen which came from the founder of the college.  The tour is sponsored by the Massachusetts Horticultural Society, and you may sign up ($12 for Mass Hort members, $20 for nonmembers) at www.masshort.org.

  • Thursday, January 26, 7:00 pm – 8:30 pm – Growing Container Succulents

    The Massachusetts Horticultural Society will hold a class taught by Carrie Waterman on Container Succulents on Thursday, January 26 from 7 – 8:30 in the Parkman Room of the Education Building at Elm Bank, 900 Washington Street in Wellesley.  She will bring a selection of succulents to show the range of these special plants.  She will also discuss the best species to keep in containers and how to care for and propagate your own succulents.  $12 for Mass Hort members, $20 for nonmembers.  Register online at www.masshort.org.  Image from www.armstronggarden.com.

  • Tuesday, January 24, 10:00 am – 4:00 pm – Digital Photography: Capturing Botanic Images

    The Massachusetts Horticultural Society welcomes Melissa Pace, garden educator, artist and photographer, to Elm Bank, 900 Washington Street, Wellesley, on Tuesday, January 24 from 10 – 4 for a workshop on Digital Photography: Capturing Botanical Images.  Melissa will held you manage important elements of photography: line, texture, shape, space, and color.  Understanding how to use them will add “wow” to your garden photography.  The program is ideal for novice photographers as they use tablets, phones, and basic cameras.  $75 for Mass Hort members, $120 for nonmembers.  Register at www.masshort.org.

  • Wednesday, January 25, 9:30 am – School Gardens

    The Wellesley Garden Study Group in collaboration with Massachusetts Horticultural Society and Wellesley Green Schools will host a program on School Gardens at the Parkman Educational Center, Mass Hort at Elm Bank, 900 Washington Street, Wellesley on January 25th . Those interested to attend may join us 9:30A.M. for refreshments and announcements, and the program will begin at 10:30A.M. Free and open to the public.

    The program School Gardens will be an illustrated history of of the school garden movement of the 19th century America and its further development. John Forti will discuss the heirloom and native plants of our region and how they can be integrated into the school curriculum from seed to table. The discussion will also be on how a school yard can enrich both habitat and community.

    John Forti is the Director of Horticulture for the Massachusetts Horticultural Society. He also serves as the Governor of Slow Food Massachusetts.   • Thursday, January 12, 7:00 pm – 8:30 pm – Introduction to Fermentation

    On Thursday, January 12, from 7 – 8:30 in the Parkman Room at The Gardens at Elm Bank, learn how to make your own lacto-fermented kraut, kimchi, and kvass. We’ll look at the science behind beneficial bacteria, pro-biotics and pre-biotics, and how bacteria can transform food. We’ll go over the basic steps in the fermentation process and share recipe ideas that include a variety of fruits and vegetables. If time permits, we’ll take a quick peek at mixed ferments like kombucha and kefir. Massachusetts Horticultural Society Member Cost: $12; Non Member Cost $20. Register online at www.masshort.org.

    Make the most of the shortest day of the year! Get outside and take a walk along the Charles River with the Massachusetts Horticultural Society, starting at Elm Bank, 900 Washington Street, on Wednesday, December 21 from 1 – 3.

  • Monday, January 9 – Friday, January 13, 10:00 am – 4:00 pm – Introduction to Vectorworks

    Vectorworks Landmark is a 2D & 3D CAD solution for landscape design. The focus of this Massachusetts Horticultural Society course will be on instruction and exercises on the basic 2d environment. Students will develop the capability to use Vectorworks Landmark module to develop designs, create compelling presentations, and exchange work with other design professionals and allow for a streamlined workflow.

    Mass Hort is now Partnering the Stockbridge School at UMass to offer classes at The Gardens at Elm Bank for UMass credit!Part of the Sustainable Food and Farming Associate’s Degree and the Certificate of Sustainable Food and Farming.
