    Invasive plants continue to be one of the main threats to the ecological integrity of natural communities and to populations of rare plants. Native Plant Trust’s Ecological Programs Coordinator, Bud Sechler, examines different strategies to combat invasive plants, drawing on invasive plant management experiences with Native Plant Trust, the Massachusetts Invasive Plant Advisory Group, and the Sudbury-Assabet-Concord Watershed Cooperative Invasive Species Management Area.     On Tuesday, April 9, the University of Massachusetts Extension’s Landscape, Nursery & Urban Forestry Program will sponsor The Invasive Plant Issue and Invasive Plant Identification, from 9 – 2 at the DoubleTree Hotel, 11 Beaver Street in Milford, Massachusetts. This course is an overview of the topic of invasive plants, focusing on why we should be concerned about them and enhancing your ability to readily identify invasive plants as well as their look-alikes. The work of the Massachusetts Invasive Plant Advisory Group, including its strategies, recommendations, and the recently released Early Detection/Rapid Response Priority List document, will be discussed. $75.   • Monday, April 8, 1:00 pm – 2:00 pm – Invasive Species Training Webinar

    The Invasive Plant Atlas of New England (IPANE) is the New England data entry portal for the Early Detection & Distribution Mapping System (EDDMapS), a web-based mapping system for documenting invasive plant distribution and management efforts. The Massachusetts Invasive Plant Advisory Group (MIPAG) encourages citizens and land managers to enter invasive plant data into IPANE, and “Early Detection” priority species listed by MA Invasive Plant Advisory Group in particular, so that we can get a better understanding of the distribution of invasive species and be more strategic in our management efforts. The IPANE data entry form can be found at the IPANE or EDDMapS websites or data can also be entered by using one of two smart phone apps: the IPANE app or the Outsmart Invasives app. On April 8th, IPANE and MIPAG are holding a training webinar from 1:00-2:00pm.
