    Come to the Medford Public Library, 111 High Street in Medford, on Thursday, February 7 from 7 – 9 for a free program sponsored by the Medford Garden Club entitled Make the Most of Your Outdoors. Ever wonder why your garden doesn’t quite fit the space it is in? Why your house might not seem so grounded as others in your neighborhood? Or why your garden leaves you feeling it just isn’t quite “right”? Scale is often what is missing in home gardens. Demetra, of Gardens by Demetra, will focus in her comments and slides on simple design strategies that will grow your garden from good to great!

    Bring your questions, as there will be plenty of time to explore specific garden design issues as well as general questions.

  • Thursday, November 1, 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm – Trees and Shrubs for Smaller Gardens

    Using trees and shrubs to good effect in small yards can be challenging. Arlington garden designer Sally Nash of Light & Shade Garden Design, Inc., will cover how to choose plants that will not outgrow the available space, where to buy the plants you have selected, and what to look for on plant labels, at this free Medford Garden Club lecture on Thursday, November 1, from 7 – 9.   • Thursday, September 6, 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm – Old Plants in a New Land: 17th Century and Beyond

    Betsy Williams, a popular speaker at garden clubs, horticultural conferences, herb festivals, and botanical gardens throughout the U.S. will discuss the history of the important herbs brought here by immigrants, at this Thursday, September 6 Medford Garden Club program. When the English settlers arrived on the coast of Massachusetts in the early 17th century, the roots and seeds of those plants necessary for their health and well being came with them. Learn the story of some of those herbs and how they are still used today. The lecture begins at 7 pm at the Medford Public Library, 111 High Street in Medford, and is free and open to the public.

  • Thursday, March 1, 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm – Gardens of Portugal

    Treat yourself to a trip through the Gardens of Portugal with Val Libby, a landscape designer and garden historian. She will share pictures and comments as she explores the garden history of Portugal while traveling from Lisbon south to the Algarve and visiting the palaces, quintas, and convents of Portugal’s past. This free program on Thursday, March 1, from 7 – 9, will be held at the Medford Public Library, 111 High Street in Medford, and is sponsored by the Medford Garden Club.

  • Thursday, May 5, 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm – Historic New England Apples

    The early 19th century is a rich chapter in the story of New England apples, and many apple varieties originated in historic New England gardens. The Medford Garden Club will sponsor a lecture by Christie Higginbottom at the Medford Public Library, 111 High Street in Medford, on Thursday, May 5, beginning at 7 pm.     Christie Higginbottom, who writes and consults on historic gardens, will explore the role played by apples at the table and on the farm in the past and look at the current revival of interest in heirloom apples.

    Can you really grow traditional Italian vegetables, herbs, and flowers in New England?  Bill McKay, of Seeds from Italy, can answer with a resounding “Yes”!     Betsy Williams, a popular speaker at garden clubs and herb festivals, will demonstrate how to grow and use garlic, how to select from the many beautiful alliums available for the garden, and how to use garlic and the “bodacious” alliums in seasonal flower decorating.   • Thursday, March 4, 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm – Beekeeping Basics, with Honey Tasting

    Learn how to start raising bees in your own backyard with Nancy Bentley Mangion. Nancy, who is a well known bee consultant and owner of the Beekeepers’ Warehouse in Woburn, has trained hundreds of New Englanders about how to keep bees.  Nancy will bring an active bee hive for demonstration (!) and offer tastings of more than 30 different honeys from around the world.
