    Using trees and shrubs to good effect in small yards can be challenging. Arlington garden designer Sally Nash of Light & Shade Garden Design, Inc., will cover how to choose plants that will not outgrow the available space, where to buy the plants you have selected, and what to look for on plant labels, at this free Medford Garden Club lecture on Thursday, November 1, from 7 – 9.     Can you really grow traditional Italian vegetables, herbs, and flowers in New England?  Bill McKay, of Seeds from Italy, can answer with a resounding “Yes”!     Betsy Williams, a popular speaker at garden clubs and herb festivals, will demonstrate how to grow and use garlic, how to select from the many beautiful alliums available for the garden, and how to use garlic and the “bodacious” alliums in seasonal flower decorating.
