  • Tuesdays, October 19, October 26 , & November 2, 9:30 am – 12:30 pm – Sogetsu Ikebana with Kaye Vosburgh

    Sogetsu Ikebana is an internationally recognized school of Japanese flower arranging.  In these Tuesday classes, to be held at the Berkshire Botanical Garden in Stockbridge, Massachusetts from October 19 – November 2, you will learn the essentials of this venerable art from Garden Club of the Back Bay member Kaye Vosburgh.  Kaye has, for many years, exhibited and taught Sogetsu Ikebana in Massachusetts, New York, several other states, and three foreign countries. Sogetsu Ikebana is the art of flower arranging in which nature and humanity are brought together. Using creative expression within certain rules of construction learn how to shape living branches, leaves, grasses, and blossoms into a simple but elegant floral design. Learning how to handle, trim and place plant material to its best advantage is a skill that will be useful in all kinds of arranging. This three session workshop will be for beginners, but continuing students are welcome to work independently and receive critiques.

    Kaye Vosburgh is an Accredited Master Judge in the National Garden Clubs and a First Grade Ikebana Teacher, Komon, in the Sogetsu School.   • Saturday, August 7, 10:00 am – 4:00 pm – Massachusetts Marketplace Festival

    Join the Massachusetts Horticultural Society for the Annual Massachusetts Marketplace Festival on Saturday, August 7, from 10 to 4, at Elm Bank Horticulture Center.  The event will feature the finest products from the region’s fields, farms, gardens and kitchens, with over 60 vendors offering new and locally produced food products, crafts, garden ornaments and gifts.  There will also be a plant sale and garden tours.  Admission is $6 for adults, $4 for MassHort members, and $2 for children under 12.  Tickets are available on site the day of the event.  Massachusetts Marketplace Festival is produced by MassHort with in-kind support from the Massachusetts Department of Agricultural Resources and the Massachusetts Specialty Food Association.  For more information, log on to www.masshort.org, or call  617-933-4981.

  • Sunday, May 2, 11:00 am – 5:00 pm- Castle Hill on The Crane Estate Open House

    In celebration of spring, The Trustees of Reservations invite you to the 2nd Annual, FREE Spring Open House at Castle Hill on the Crane Estate to enjoy a day of fun. Plant a seedling and help them recover some of the hundreds of trees lost in the recent nor’easter. Pack a picnic and they’ll provide lawn games such as croquet and bocce ball, a Maypole dance, self-guided tours of the Great House and grounds, refreshments, and more. Please feel free to bring friends and family, but leave furry friends at home.

    The Open House thanks the public for its support of The Trustees’ ongoing restoration of the Castle Hill grounds, which in recent years has included historic plantings and restorations of the Italian Garden and the Great House forecourt. This February, The Trustees began the first phase of a 3-year renovation plan of the Grand Allee, the one-half mile long, undulating, grassy lawn framed by classical sculptures, Norway spruce, and pine hedgerows. Phase One of the project includes the removal of approximately 150 trees and the planting of 65 7-foot Norway spruce and White Pines.

    The Allee Restoration was disrupted by the late February nor’easter that wreaked havoc on the North Shore. Castle Hill was hit particularly hard, with more than 300 trees coming down in the storm. Crews worked tirelessly to clean up the property and make it safe for the public. Much work, including replanting trees and stabilizing stripped embankments, remains. The Trustees invite the public to help by planting seedlings in celebration of spring at the May 2nd Open House.

  • Saturday, March 13 – Longwood Symphony Orchestra Benefit Concert for The Food Project

    Founded in 1982, The Longwood Symphony Orchestra is recognized as a unique model of community engagement.  The group uses its performances to raise both funds and awareness through its healing Art of Music ™ program.  On Saturday, March 13, at the New England Conservatory’s Jordan Hall, the Longwood Symphony Orchestra will hold a concert benefiting The Food Project.  Tickets will be available for $40 per individual.  $100 will buy a ticket to the concert and a pre-concert reception.  $250 will purchase a ticket to the concert and reception, as well as two tickets for Food Project youth and/or members of their families.  For more information, or to reserve tickets, email events@thefoodproject.org.

  • Saturday, February 13 – Berkshire Botanical Garden Annual Winter Lecture

    Prince Charles’s Head Gardener, Debs Goodenough, will be the featured speaker at the Berkshire Botanical Garden’s Annual Winter Lecture on Saturday, February 13, from 2 pm – 4 pm, at Monument Mountain High School in Great Barrington, Massachusetts.  A reception and book signing will follow the lecture.

    Ms. Goodenough replaced David Howard in 2008 as Head Gardener of The Highgrove Estate.
