Are you interested in learning about local river science? On January 10 at the Fowler Branch of the Concord Public Library, come learn about water quality programs for the Sudbury, Assabet and Concord Rivers with the local nonprofit OARS 3 Rivers from Water Quality Program Manager Abby McCarthy. She will share a fun and interesting presentation about the ongoing programs to monitor and improve water quality, what issues affect river health in the watershed, and how you can get involved in local river science volunteering. Although this talk is designed for a general audience of adults and youth ages 12 and up, people of all ages are welcome to attend. The talk will be 45 minutes, with ample time for questions. We hope to help build excitement for local environmental projects and water science!

Abby McCarthy is the Water Quality Program Manager OARS 3 Rivers, where she manages data collection and analysis for water quality and bacteria in the Sudbury, Assabet and Concord subwatersheds. Abby previously served as the Geology Assistant at Yellowstone National Park, where she yelled “Noise for bears!” during hydrology field data collections. She also completed one year of Hydrogeology research with the Kansas Geological Survey and an Earth Science Master’s specializing in flood research, among other experiences as a scientist. Outside of work, she is an active hiker and participant in most outdoor activities, as well as an enthusiastic volunteer with local LGBTQ organizations. One of Abby’s favorite aspects of her job is working with the awesome program volunteers.
