    Grow Native Massachusetts wraps up its 2013 Evening with the Experts at the Cambridge Public Library, 449 Broadway, Cambridge on Wednesday, June 5, from 7 – 8:30, welcoming Dave Barnett, President of Mount Auburn Cemetery, who will speak on The Restoration of Consecration Dell.  At the heart of Mount Auburn, Consecration Dell is a landscape of great beauty and a hot spot for birding. Yet not long ago, it was overrun by invasive species and suffering from erosion. With their commitment to stewardship, Cemetery staff have spent over a decade restoring this special place, establishing a thriving community of native plants and improving vital habitat for wildlife. This story is full of lessons about the significant challenges and rewards of ecological restoration.   • Saturday, April 27, 7:30 am – Warblers at Mount Auburn

    Visit the beautiful historic Mount Auburn Cemetery, a famous spring hotspot for migrating songbirds, with the Athol Bird & Nature Club on Saturday, April 27. Meet at the gate of the cemetery at 7:30 a.m. If time allows, you’ll also visit the Great Meadows National Wildlife Refuge. Bring snacks or a lunch, and water.   • Tuesday, June 12, 10:00 am – 12:00 noon – Bio-Filtration Success at Mount Auburn Cemetery

  • Thursday, January 19, 1:00 pm – 3:30 pm – Sustainable Practices for Ecosystem Restoration

    Groundscapes Express has worked on many ecosystem restoration projects throughout the region. Groundscapes’ approach treats the whole site as an ecosystem or a sub-watershed for greatest success. Projects implement best practices for improved water quality, soil compaction, invasive species, and erosion control. At this Roundtable presentation on Thursday, January 19, from 1 – 3:30 pm at the Wellesley College Botanic Gardens’ Visitors Center, 106 Central Street in Wellesley,, John Engwer will describe ecosystem restoration projects at sites including Wellesley College, Kent Hospital, the Rose Kennedy Greenway, Mount Auburn Cemetery, and Fresh Pond Reservation.  Though the sites differ widely, the issues of soil compaction, stormwater management, and invasive species control are common to all.  Registrations are limited – call 617-436-5838, or email ela.info@comcast.net.  $20 ELA or Wellesley Friends of Horticulture member price, $25 for nonmembers.

    Low growing plants that cover the ground without resorting to continued weeding and mowing are important to Mount Auburn’s ecologically sustainable horticultural practices. Join Frances Doyle and Jim Gorman for a walk on Monday, July 18, beginning at 5:30 pm, featuring this sometimes overlooked group of plants. Fee: $5 members; $10 non-members.     Perennials play an important role in accenting many areas of Mount Auburn Cemetery: borders, beds and woodland. Join Frances Doyle and Jim Gorman for a look at some of the perennial stars and understudies to be found there, on Sunday, June 26 beginning at 1 pm. This is a limited walking program.     Native shrubs add seasonal interest when used as specimen plantings, in mixed borders, as hedges or as hardscape accents for landscapes. Join Jim Gorman at Mount Auburn Cemetery in Cambridge on Saturday, June 18 at 1 pm for a walk focused on their impressive collection and take home a few planting ideas.   • Tuesday, June 14, 5:30 pm – From Lichens to Lindens: A Walk Through Plant Evolution

  • Sunday, April 17, 1:00 pm – Plants from the Bible

    The Friends of Mount Auburn would like to welcome you to visit Mount Auburn Cemetery on Sunday, April 17, beginning at 1 pm, for a walking tour entitled Plants from the Bible.  Jim Gorman will identify plants known with either certainty or probability to be growing in Biblical times.  Additionally, he may visit closely allied species – relatives of plants mentioned in the Scriptures.  Consider this tour a walking recollection of the Holy Land.  The fee is $5 for Friends of Mount Auburn, $10 for non-members.  For more information, call 617-607-1952.  Below is spikenard, from Song of Songs.

    Join Darryl Sullivan and Jonathan Webb, Mount Auburn’s Gardening Supervisor and Arbor Supervisor, for this walk and hands-on demonstration to learn about pruning ornamental trees and shrubs, Wednesday, March 9 beginning at 10 am at Mount Auburn Cemetery, 580 Mount Auburn Street in Cambridge. They will discuss pruning methods and tools and look at examples. Bring your questions and hand pruners. Space is limited. $5 for Friends of Mt. Auburn, $10 for everyone else.
