  • Sunday, October 23, 12:00 noon – 2:00 pm – 6th Annual Canine Promenade

    Join the Esplanade Association on Sunday, October 23 from 12 – 2 on the Charles River Esplanade, on Fiedler Field, for the 6th Annual Canine Promenade. The Canine Promenade is a 1/2‐mile Halloween costume parade around the Esplanade to benefit the park, highlight the park as a resource for dog owners and to raise awareness about park improvements. In the spirit of the season, we encourage you to dress up your dogs (and yourself) in costume.

    Registration: 12:00pm
    Parade Marches: 12:20pm

    ~Some of this year’s vendors will include Pawsh Boutique, 2 Dogs Treats, MSPCA, Pawblo Picasso, Pet Acupuncture Works, Petco, Pet Supplies Plus, Red Dog Spa, and Slobbr!

    *Dogs must be registered to participate. All animals must be leashed. Donations are non-refundable.

    This year we are thrilled that the funds from the Canine Promenade will support the Esplanade Association’s work to restore the Lotta Fountain as a destination for park dogs and their owners!     VOLUNTEER!

    We are seeking a few volunteers to help with some light setup and running of the event. Volunteers will be needed from 11am – 2pm on Sunday, October 23rd. If you are interested in volunteering please email volunteers@esplanadeassociation.org.

  • Saturdays, April 23 and 30, May 7 and 14, 9:00 am – 11:00 am – Family Chicken Project

    This collaborative effort on four successive Saturdays beginning April 23 between Historic New England and the MSPCA shows how to raise chickens in your backyard. Program participants attend workshops to learn about different chicken breeds, how to build a chicken coop and keep the flock healthy, as well as about feed, first aid, and safety. Afterward, attendees are certified to help care for the chickens at the farm throughout the season. When the season ends, the chickens will be offered to the participating families for purchase The series also includes a field trip to Nevins Farm and a lecture by Sarah Corchense, D.V.M., of Tufts Veterinary Hospital. The program will take place at the Spencer-Peirce-Little Farm, 5 Little’s Lane, Newbury, Massachusetts.  Registration required. Please call 978-462-2634 for more information.   • Thursday, December 10 – Sunday, December 13 – Christmas in Edgartown

    There are events all day and night throughout the weekend, with something for everyone. The colonial white homes and buildings of Edgartown make the perfect backdrop to classic holiday decorations that brighten up Main Street. The beautiful historic inns are decked in greeting card perfect Victorian style. A holiday gift from the island, Christmas in Edgartown is a truly unique celebration of the season of lights.

    Something for Everybody
    This year, in addition to the celebration-defining events, you can participate in a gingerbread house workshop and a cookie tasting contest, visit some of the historic churches of Edgartown, enjoy Christmas music at a variety of venues and sample wine and goodies at a number of local shops and restaurants.

    Edgartown Traditions
    As quaint a holiday event as you’ll find anywhere, the Main Street Christmas parade this year will include a procession of dogs adopted from the MSPCA. The lighting of the tree in Village Green and the Edgartown lighthouse are perennial crowd pleasers. Other cherished annual events include Donaroma’s Evening of Enchantment, the Festive Inn Tour and the Chowder Contest.

    Shopping and More
    Shoppers looking for unique gifts can visit the Handmade from the Heart Sale, the Holiday Arts and Crafts Show and the Elves Fair featuring rummage sale items. The Minnesingers, once again, cast their magical spell at the Whaling Church, as they perform Holiday favorites.

    For Kids
    Activities for kids include a treasure hunt and appearances by Santa. Local shops and other businesses greet visitors with cider, hot chocolate and treats. There are raffles, decorating workshops, and open houses at galleries, banks and realtors, as well as the Main Street inns.
