  • Sunday, April 21, 8:15 am – 10:15 am – Early Spring Warbler Outing at Mt. Auburn Cemetery

Join Feminist Bird Club Boston for an early spring outing at Mount Auburn Cemetery. Open to all birding levels and experience- beginners especially welcome! We’ll meet up at 8:15 a.m. by the front gates of Mount Auburn Cemetery in Cambridge.

    Route and Accessibility

The cemetery has relatively even dirt, grass, and mulch paths, with a few gradual ups and downs. There are also flat paved roads throughout the cemetery, and we can certainly keep to those if that’s better for anyone. There are places to stop and sit and the total distance travelled will be 1.5-2 miles.

    Considerations and Travel

We’ll have some extra binoculars to share. There are public restrooms and a water fountain near the entrance. Parking is available throughout the cemetery; you can park on any road without a green line, but please be sure to park on the pavement, not the grass. The cemetery is also accessible by public transit with nearby stops for the 71, 73, and 75 buses.

Any questions, please email feministbirdclubboston@gmail.com or message us on the Facebook page or Instagram account.

  • Thursday, July 14, 9:00 am – 10:30 am – Extending the Flowering Season

Adding new plants to the collections at Mount Auburn Cemetery (580 Mt. Auburn Street in Cambridge) which flower in late spring or summer is not just about adding color to the landscape. This initiative is also a response to climate change and the general trend of plants flowering earlier and earlier each year. Because so much biological activity is centered around the time when plants are flowering, the life cycles of insects, and subsequently, the health of other wildlife species such as birds, are a concern. Come on this walk with Dennis Collins, Horticultural Curator, on Thursday, July 14 from 9 – 10:30 and learn about this recent addition to Mount Auburn’s list of horticultural initiatives for the next five years. Funding for programs has been provided in part by the Massachusetts Cultural Council. $7 for Friends of Mt. Auburn, $12 for non-members. Register online at http://mountauburn.org/2016/extending-the-flowering-season/

  • Saturday, October 1, 10:00 am – Memorial Service for Past President Patsy Boyce

Patsy Boyce, former President of The Garden Club of the Back Bay, age 77, passed away in August in Sun City West, Arizona.  She is survived by her husband Joseph Sidlovsky and her son James Boyce.  Among her many neighborhood accomplishments, Patsy designed the courtyard of The Boston Public Library prior to its latest incarnation, and the four magnificent Japanese maple trees she acquired were removed and replanted at Mt. Auburn Cemetery.  She was also a flight attendant, and secretary to President Lyndon B. Johnson.  There will be a memorial service for Patsy at Trinity Church at Copley Square on Saturday, October 1 beginning at 10 am.   We anticipate that many Garden Club members will wish to attend and pay their last respects to one of our most cherished members.  James Boyce plans to establish a fund with The Garden Club of the Back Bay in his mother’s memory, providing horticultural assistance to Boston neighborhoods with fewer resources than ours, details of which will be announced soon.  Contributions in lieu of flowers may be sent to The Garden Club of the Back Bay, c/o Elisabeth Lay, 239 Marlborough Street, Boston, MA 02116.
