  • Friday, March 3, 10:30 am – 2:30 pm – Watercolor with Asian Paper Collage

    In this Massachusetts Horticultural Society in person workshop, we will explore combining Asian paper collage with watercolor paints. The class takes place at the Gardens at Elm Bank in Wellesley on March 3 from 10:30 – 2:30. $55 for Mass Hort members, $75 for nonmembers. Register at www.masshort.org

    The various textures of the papers and the slight resist quality of the glue, will result in interesting textural accidents when watercolor paints are added. Demos and handouts will be provided to create these uniquely textured paintings.

     Nan Rumpf grew up in a small Iowa town on the banks of the Mississippi River, where she spent much of her childhood exploring the outdoors on her bicycle and daydreaming under a lilac bush. She graduated from the University of Iowa with a Bachelor of Arts. She has studied watercolor painting with Susan Swinand, Jane Goldman, Paul George, Charles Reid, Miles Batt, and Cheng Khee Chee.

    Her paintings have been exhibited at The DeCordova Museum School Gallery, The Danforth Museum, The Art Complex Museum in Duxbury, The Attleboro Arts Museum, The Wellesley Free Library (First Place Award), The Center For The Arts in Natick, Art on the Common in Needham (First Place Award), The Clinton Art show (Best In Show), Post Road Art (First Place Award in the Abstract Show), The Wellesley Community Center (Margaret Fitzwilliam Award for Excellence in Watercolor), The New England Watercolor Society Show in Cotuit (Woodruff Art Center Award) and her painting Soaring was awarded by George Nick in Concord Art’s Juried Members show.

    She is a member of the Concord Art Association, the Wellesley Society of Artists, The Rhode Island Watercolor Society and is a signature member of the New England Watercolor Society. She was chosen as one of the two art judges for The Amazing Things Summer Juried Art Show in 2012.

    She has been a visiting artist instructing students at Framingham State University, The Bancroft School, and at Medfield High School. She has given artist talks and demos for many art groups in New England. 

  • Thursdays, April 1 – May 6, 4:00 pm – 6:00 pm – Chinese Brush Painting, Online

    This Massachusetts Horticultural Society online workshop will start off with a demonstration of all of the basic strokes and information about the materials. Then we will progress to paint the following subjects: river reflections, the rabbit, garden pea and yellow butterfly, gladiolus and praying mantis, goldfish, and the rooster. These lessons would work for beginners as well as artists with some experience with Chinese brush painting.   • Thursday, February 28, 12:00 pm – 4:00 pm – Dripped Wax Resist with Watercolor

    On February 28 from noon – 4 at The Gardens at Elm Bank, 900 Washington Street in Wellesley, explore the exciting possibilities of combining melted wax with watercolor. Instructor Nan Rumpf show you how to drip and draw gestural lines with liquefied beeswax. Then she will demonstrate how to develop your artwork with watercolor glazes. The wax dries quickly to offers a graceful resist for your watercolors, combining an important textural element with a fluid medium. The beeswax and the specialized melted beeswax tools will be provided by the instructor.

  • Saturdays, January 14 – February 11, 1:00 pm – 3:00 pm – Nature Arts for Families

    Explore the creative pleasures of artistic self expression together! These sessions with art instructor and educator Nan Rumpf are designed for parents and children in grade 5 and up. This Wellesley College Friends of Horticulture class will experiment with drawing, nature printing, watercolor painting, scratchboard work, and collage. Sessions at the Wellesley College Botanic Garden will encourage experimentation and exploration. No previous experience is necessary. All materials will be provided. Fee for the five session series (Saturdays, January 14 – February 11 from 1 – 3) is $150 for WCFH members, $185 for non-members. Fee covers registration for one child and one adult partner.     Capture the essence of different plants and flowers using expressive gesture strokes based on Asian ink brush painting traditions.  Working with black ink and watercolor, Nan Rumpf (paintings below by Nan Rumpf courtesy of www.needham.patch.com)  helps you interpret plant forms with brush and ink.  Also explore rice paper washes using Assam tea and watercolor.  Join the Wellesley College Friends of Horticulture to learn new skills or brush up on your old skills, on four successive Saturdays, April 30 – May 21, from 1 – 4.  This class can help watercolor artists expand their repertoire of brushstrokes as well as provide a useful transition step between drawing and painting.  WCFH members $125, Non-Members $160.   To register, call 781-283-3094, ext. 4, or log on to www.wellesley.edu/WCFH.
