  • Saturday and Sunday, January 4 & 5, 9:00 am – 4:00 pm – The Science of Plant Propagation

    In this two day Berkshire Botanical Garden in person course on January 4 and 5 from 9 – 4, learn the art and science of plant propagation with a focus on the basic botany needed to understand and successfully propagate plants. Sexual and asexual propagation methods including sowing seeds, cuttings, grafting, layering, and division will be covered. Students will learn the fascinating science behind propagation along with the various techniques used to create new plants.

    Adam Wheeler started working and playing with plants at Broken Arrow Nursery in 2004 after completing his BS degree in Urban Forestry and Landscape Horticulture at the University of Vermont. His favorite role at Broken Arrow Nursery is plant propagation and the acquisition and development of new plants. Adam is a past recipient of the Young Nursery Professional Award from the New England Nursery Association and is the current Vice President of the North American Maple Society. He loves to share his passion for plants through photography and educational outreach. As a result, he lectures widely on a variety of subjects and is also an adjunct lecturer at Naugatuck Valley Community College and the Berkshire Botanical Garden. With his spare time he enjoys cultivating his eclectic collection of rare and unusual plants, rock climbing and competitive giant pumpkin growing!

  • Sunday, March 3, 1:00 pm – 4:00 pm – Heirloom Apple Grafting

    Come join Broken Arrow Nurseries grafting guru, Adam Wheeler, on Sunday, March 3 from 1 – 4 at Berkshire Botanical Garden for this hands-on workshop that explores the world of grafting heirloom apples. Participants will be given a brief lecture that explores the methods and intricacies of this time-tested craft. Following the lecture, participants will put this newfound knowledge to work by grafting a few specimen apples of their own to take home.

  • Saturday, April 6 – Sunday, April 7 – 30th Annual Connecticut Cactus and Succulent Show and Sale

    The Connecticut Cactus and Succulent Society will celebrate its 30th Annual Cactus and Succulent Show and Sale on Saturday, April 6 and Sunday, April 7, 2013, at the Naugatuck Valley Community College, 750 Chase Parkway in Waterbury, Connecticut.

    This is the largest show of its kind in the East, with nearly one thousand visitors each year. The judged show has more than 100 categories with over 500 entries and this year there are 14 vendors with a huge selection of C&S plants, pots, soils, and books.

    Admission to the show and sale is free, refreshments are available. The sales area will be open to the public on Sat. from 10:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M., on Sunday from 10:00 A.M. until 4:00 P.M.

    Free plants will be given to the first 50 families entering the show on both days. There will also be a series of free lectures (schedule of lectures on the below website) and auctions of larger plants.

  • Saturday, April 9 – Sunday, April 10 – 28th Annual Cactus & Succulent Show

    The Connecticut Cactus and Succulent Society will hold its 28th  Annual Show and Sale on Saturday, April 9, from 10 – 5, and Sunday, April 10, from 10 – 4, at Naugatuck Valley Community College’s Art & Music Center Cafeteria, Fifth Floor, 750 Chase Parkway, Waterbury, Connecticut (Exit 18 off I-84).  Free admission.  This is a judged show, with an auction, refreshments, book sale, lectures and demonstrations. Many leading cactus and succulent vendors will be there.  Each day the first 50 families will receive a free plant.  Lectures will cover such topics as Raising Succulents from Seed, Yankee Ingenuity in Horticulture, Flower Show Growing and Preparation, Living Stones, Potting Mixes for Succulents, Hardy Cacti for the New England Garden, and Ariocarpus (pictured below, in an image from www.botanica.uk.net.)  Each lecture lasts approximately 20 minutes, and programs are subject to change.  For more information, log on to www.ctcactusclub.com, or call 860-489-8356.
