  • Saturday, October 23, 12:00 noon – 3:00 pm – New England Hosta Society Annual Meeting

    The New England Hosta Society is happy to return to in-person meetings, and its 2021 Annual Meeting will take place October 23 at Tower Hill Botanic Garden in Boylston, in Classrooms A and B. At noon, bring your own lunch (tea, coffee, water, and soda will be provided) and socialize before the meeting and elections beginning at 1 pm. At 2, Bob Solberg, hosta hybridizer and owner of Green Hill Hosta in North Carolina, will speak. He is the recipient of the 2003 Alex J. Summers Distinguished Merit Award by the American Hosta Society. The company is among the leading introducers of new hostas in the world. Many of them were hybridized by Bob Solberg and other leading hosta hybridizers. The high quality of our plants and their very large root systems is well known. (Great roots make a great growing hosta!)

    Whether you garden in sun or shade, there are many lovely spring perennials that will add colorful flowers and interesting foliage to the early season garden.      Joan Butler has been an enthusiastic gardener and plant collector for over 35 years, and believes gardens should invite you to linger in the world outside your door. The gardens on her half-acre suburban property have been included on several garden tours and feature exciting plant combinations, dramatic horticultural specimens, and extensive collections of native plants, hosta and epimedium. Joan has a deep and fundamental interest in the natural world. She holds a BA in Geology from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst and a Certificate in Landscape Management from UMass Extension Green School. She is a Master Gardener, a horticulturist at Weston Nurseries, and is a past Chairman of the Massachusetts Landscape Design Council. She is a member of the Garden Consultants Council, the New England Hosta Society and is an accredited Flower Show Judge. Joan has presented programs at flower shows in Massachusetts and Connecticut, and at numerous garden clubs, horticultural societies and professional organizations.

    On Saturday, October 28 at 2 pm at Tower Hill Botanic Garden, The Art of Hostas takes a vibrant, colorful and exciting look at these amazing plants in a whole new light. Rob Zimmer will showcase the qualities and characteristics of hostas that make them outstanding garden plants, both as specimens, as well as in breathtaking combinations with other plants. You’ll also see hostas used in ways you may have never seen before. Co-sponsored with New England Hosta Society.

    Rob Zimmer is an award-winning nature and garden author, columnist and radio host who has written for many daily newspapers throughout Wisconsin such as the Appleton Post-Crescent, Green Bay Press-Gazette, Oshkosh Northwestern and others. His columns also appear weekly in the Wisconsin State Farmer. He is the author of the books Voices of the Wind: Four Seasons in Wild Wisconsin, Wild Seasons: The Beauty of Native Wildflowers, Shadows and Light: Showcasing a Hosta Love Affair and  Reflecting: Nature in Black and White.   • Wednesday, July 28, 6:30 pm – 8:00 pm – Hostas

    On July 28, former New England Hosta Society President Mary Arnberg will bring a long time of love for hostas (and a lot of samples) to Elm Bank to discuss what makes hostas such a terrific plant for the home gardener, as part of MassHort’s Wednesday Evenings at Elm Bank series. There are more than 4,000 named varieties of hosta and Mary will present examples of hosta lovers’ favorites, as well as other varieties to appeal to gardeners with either sun or shade conditions.

    Sessions begin at 6:30 and go until 8 p.m. or until the last question has been answered. All sessions are held at Elm Bank, either in the Hunnewell carriage house or the Education Building. MassHort members pay $8 per session. The cost for non-members is $10. Refreshments are offered.  For more information log on to www.masshort.org.
